William Lynch b1829 Halifax - completed with thanks
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 20:22 BST (UK) »

Hi

I don't know if I'm on the wrong track here, but I'm wondering if this William belongs to someone else before I pursue it.

I'm having a real struggle with my gr gr grandmother who I think was married three times.  I know once for definite, because I have a copy of it from the parish register.  But she is down as widow on it.  Her name was Mary Bowman, but she is down as Lynch on the register (widowed).  She has a son called William on the following censuses.  He is always down as being born in Yorkshire, once even down as Leeds.  He changed his name to Bowman at some time, and married as Bowman.  As I live in Whitehaven, and so did he from the 1841 census, I can't get any further on this atm.

There isa birth on BMD of a William Lynch b 1 November 1829 in Halifax, Yorks.  His parents are William Lynch and Mary.  This would fit, but I can't find a death up here of his dad either.  If this William belongs in somebody else's family, I can leave him alone, and try again, but if anybody could help with verification, I would be very grateful.

Hi Rosemary

William Lynch born Halifax 1829 isn't mine, but I doubt he is yours either. I found him on the IGI and there is also an Emma Lynch with the same parents in the same batch, born 1832.

On the 1841 census there is Mary Lynch 45 in Halifax, with William 11 and Emma 9. No William senior.

On Free BMD there is a death for William Lynch in Halifax registration district in 1838.

That looks like the whole family accounted for and still in Halifax in 1841.

Also I come from Halifax myself, and would never say I come from Leeds! It's almost a different country!

Do you have William with his mother in Whitehaven in 1841? The only William Lynch I found was 15 and a miner, not with his family. But maybe he was Bowman by then, I didn't look.

Hi Anne

That's cleared that up then!!

William is on the 1841 census as Tynch, and is living in the same house, but on the next page with his sister, her husband, brother, and a boarder.  That's another story.

Mary had three children, Bridget, James and Thomas Macavoy/McEvoy, before William was born.  I can't find their baptisms, or Mary's original marriage either.  She's created a few problems.  I have Mary's birth in her home village, but nothing until she married James Glasson in 1833.  She then went on to have numerous other children, one of them my gr grandfather.

Thanks for looking anyway.  I know what you mean by Leeds and Halifax, but he could have been told one place, and been brought up somewhere else I suppose.  I used to live in Hull a long time ago.
