Family tree maker
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 21:08 BST (UK) »

Hi I am not sure if this is the right place to put this but....

I have been using Family Tree maker starter edition 2005 and I have been given for my birthday the who do you think you are family tree maker. Does anyone know if they are compatible, by that i mean if I save my info on floppy disc, (the starter edition won't let me back up on CD) Then uninstall the 2005 and install the new one, will I be able to transfer the info from the floppy discs. Or and this pains me to even think about I have so many names and dates and so forth will I have to print out all the info and retype it all into the new programme?

Advice welcome

Not sure, but from what I've briefly read on google it looks like they are compatible.
Do you know how to export gedcom files from the program?
If not, there's a guide here on how to export gedcom files from Family Tree 2005
http://member.melbpc.org.au/~mleeding/pdfs/Misc/Gedcom_Export.pdf

Then you will have to import the gedcom file into the Who Do You Think You Are? programme or otherwise.... Smiley

Oh no, that's a shame, sorry about that Sad
Is there no way you can export information to at least copy and paste it from program to program?
Good luck either way!

Hang on!
Look on your computer for any files with the suffix .FTW and .FBK.
They're probably in the same location as the Family Tree Maker Program.
These are the data and backup files of all of your work.
Make copies of them and put them into a folder within My Documents.
When you have installed the new version, which will probably go into the same directory as the current one then everything SHOULD work as before. Your existing data should still be there, but if it isn't then you've got your copies.

Hi Amanda

In FTM2005, youshould be able to go View / Tree Charts / All-In-One Tree to create a tree diagram layout of all the names in your tree.

Then go File / Export File / Entire File

You should then get another box where you can save the file,
Save In choose from this drop down list at the top of the screen where to save the file.
File Name give the file a name you'll be able to find easily.
Save As Type should give you a drop down list of different types, choose GEDCOM(*.GED)

Click Save. This has saved your file as a gedcom, and you should be able to import this into the new programme. Almost all family history programmes can read gedcom files.

Hope this helps
