Topic: Deddington PRs Lookup Please: SHIRLEY (Read 278 times)

I would greatly appreciate a lookup in the DEDDINGTON parish register for the baptisms of the brothers William & John SHIRLEY who, according to the 1851 census, both gave themselves as age 43 and born in the neighbouring hamlet of HEMPTON (birth abt 1808).

Hi there,
Well I am sorry to say that you are going to be none the wiser - had a look through my Deddington PR fiche just now- the only baptismal entry for SHIRLEY between 1805 and 1810 is as follows-
13 Oct 1807, SHIRLEY (Blank) of Hempton.
no christian name shown whatsoever.

This looks like it could be them (twins?). But it's a little weird that there would be no parents named either. 
Could I bother you to have a quick look for any other Shirley baptisms in the 1810-1820 timeframe in Deddington, with parents Thomas & Ann (the putative parents of the William & John).

I noticed the marriages had :
5 May 1803 SHIRLEY X John of Little Barford
BURBOROW X Sarah, o.t.p.
Wit. Thomas KNIBBS (only) Banns.
10 Oct 1803 SHIRLEY X Thomas
FRENCH X Ann, b.o.t.p. Banns.
Wit. John SMITH, Ann PARISH.
Now then I also noticed that there were a few other SHIRLEY also from Hempton with baptism registered from c. 1815 to 1864 on th Deddington fiche.

Thank you so very much for this. It is just what I was looking for. 
I believe I have what I need for the later Shirleys in Deddington; but kind of you to offer. My next quest is to try and find out where the father Thomas Shirley (b. abt 1775 per the 1851 census) came from.

Hi again,
Had a look at some of my other Oxon. PR fiche' after seeing that marriage of John SHIRLEY of Little Barford in the Deddington record and would you believe there was a Thomas SHIRLEY baptised in Barford St Michael 2 Mar 1777, s/o William & Ann.(shown in the B.T's as John) - might be worthwhile investigating this one further as that would have made him 26 years when the marriage of Thomas and Ann French took place in Deddington 1803.
There were in fact quite a lot of SHI(U)RLEY's) in the Barford fiche and it is not all that far from Hempton or Deddington.

Thanks very much again. Yes, that Thomas in 1777 does look like a good candidate, given the appearance of the John from Barford in the 1803 marriage. Definitely worth checking out further!
