Hi
I don't understand how you have got too many hits!
I entered Smith, Alex, male, 1864-1865, Berwickshire and Longformarcus and got one return which is no doubt him. The ref is 750 Page 5. (1864)
This will cost you 6 units (£1.20) to view and download an image of the original birth cert.
Regards

(PS - Patrish, I'm just in for a moment )

Becky
Don't look at the Baptisms - look at the Births (1855-1906). Unless you're looking for Alexander, senior

And the only one that I can find on the 1891, born Berwickshire is: District 652/2 ED 20 Page 21
63 Burnbank Street, Coatbridge, LKS
Robert Gordon , hd, 24, railway engine stoker, b. Airdrie Marion Gordon, 25, b. Airdire Alexander Smith, 27, boarder, Railway Guard, b. Berwickshire
It might not be him though

A search tip for Scotlands People - only give the minimum amount of info on the names - Alex returns all names beginning with those letters, including Alexander

PS - have you checked him on the 1901?

Think this is the Coatbridge one in 1901
District 652/2 ED 21 Page 5
29 Burnback St, Coatbridge:
Alexander Smith , Railway Guard, b. Duns*, Berwickshire Christina, 37, b. Killin, Perthshire Alexander, 5, b. Coatbridge Donald, 1, b. Coatbridge
*Duns is very close to Edrom and Lonformacus, so it is a strong possibility

Hi Becky
The birth cert states that he was illegitimate. Father Alexander Smith, Agricultural labourer and Isabella Brown, farm servant. As they both signed the birth cert, it meant that alexander, snr, acknowledged that he was the father.
It might be that it was a common law marriage, aknowledged under Scots law, or that Alexander, jnr, as you say, gave that info on his marriage cert for 'decency's ' sake.
It might be worth trying to find Isabella's death cert. That would clarify things I'll have a quick look but I'm up to my eyes in moving so

Becky
do you have any information about the Brown family - Isabella's parent's and her siblings? I've found a possible in 1891 and 1901 but I need to check if she had a brother Robert?

Hi Gadget,
Thanks for your trouble, Isabella is one of my wife's maternal ancestors, parents Robert Brown & Mary Scott, she had a brother Robert 1832 but have no details from 1841, she was living with her brother Alexander 1852 and mother at Ayton in 1881, but Alexander is missing 1891 at least in Berwickshire, most of the family were living in the Coldingham area around 1871. James 1848,Adam 1837, Helen 1830,Hugh 1835.
I notice that Alexander accepted his son at birth, Isabella may have lived with him after 1887 when her mother died, but it could be common law as there is no marriage any where on "scotlandspeople". Barry

This is what I found on the 1891 and 1901, Becky. it might well be her:
1891 - District 799 ED 3 Page 20
Townhead Farm, Melrose, Roxburghshire
Robert Brown, hd, 41, farmer, b. Greenlaw, Berwick Isabella Brown, sister, 44, Farmer's housekeeper, b. Swinton, Berwick James Brown, nephew, 25, farmer, b. Coldingham, Berwick William Miln, servant, 17, cattleman, b. Galashiels Roxburgh
by 1901, I think they have moved back to Berwickshire
District 756 ED 1 page 14 Westertown Farm, Westruther
Robert Brown, hd, 51, farmer, b. Duns Isabella, sister, 50, Housekeeper, b. Duns James, nephew, 34, farmer, b. Coldingham
I noticed that on one census she was down as born Caddington. I think it might well be a mis-reading of Coldingham.
