Baron Ashby of Brandon (Suffolk)
« on: Saturday 04 August 07 17:24 BST (UK) »

Hi, i hope this is the right place to post this Undecided

I am trying to find what connection if any there is between Brandon and Eric Ashby a well known Botanist who became Baron Ashby of Brandon in 1973.

Could it be that Brandon was chosen simply because it was available, and in fact he has no connection with town?

Eric Ashby was knighted in 1956 and died in 1992.

Any help would be appreciated,
Adrian

Hi Adrian

Looking on the net he was born Leytonstone Essex 24 August 1904

Dont think he ever went to Brandon looking at his records where he worked or studied

People usually choose their own names if they are available.  He would have had some connection even if it was only that he went there on holiday.

Try the Brandon website.  You could e-mail someone there.

Hi Ricky and Sylviaann,

Yes i have tried googling him and as you say there is loads of info on him. He was connected to the Colleges in Cambridge, not so far from Brandon. The Brandon website is where this started, or at least on the Brandon Forum of which i am a moderator.

I am inclined to think that Brandon was convenient for him and was available. The name Ashby is not a Brandon Name, although there are Ashley's in the Town.

Thanks to you both for your help,
Adrian

PS just had a thought i have not seen any mention of his marriage, could that be the link?

Wonder if the title he wanted was unavailable so was given a choice of others he could have and chose Brandon purely for the name.

Then of course it may not be your Brandon but another village.

I'm thinking here that had Laurence Olivier who lived in Ashurst in West Sussex had been called Baron Olivier of Ashurst, there are at least three Ashurst's including one in East Sussex.

Hi Jean,

As you say it could be that his original choice was already taken and he opted for Brandon as it was not taken.

It was definitely Brandon in Suffolk, if you google baron Ashby of Brandon it comes up as Suffolk.

Thanks for your help,

Hi Adrian

Been looking on the net via AltaVista search engine and Answers.com Found loads of pages about Eric Ashby but never any mention of wife or family. Which I though a bit perculiar as some of them were obituaries.

I then remembered a couple of books I have so dug one of them out.

Found Sir Eric Ashby Kt. cr 1956 in my 1967 edition of Whos Who.

Its the same chap. His parents were HERBERT CHARLES ASHBY of Bromley, Kent and HELENA CHATER. Married 1931 Wife's name   ELIZABETH HELEN FARRIES, Castle-Douglas, Scotland. 2 sons (no names mentioned)

Recreations: Chamber music and Walking. Address Clare College Cambridge and Club Athenaeum

His entry is half a page long and he held a lot of posts during the war years so maybe he had connections with Brandon in those days. Although no specific mention.

Hi Jean,

The Barons wife being from Scotland rules out my theory of a connection through in-laws.

With his connection to Cambridge and it being close to Brandon i suppose it is possible that he lived in/near the Town, or had links with the "Gentry" such as the de Lotbiniere family who owned Brandon Hall.

Lord Ashby's address in the 1972 edition of Who's Who was:- Manor Rd, Brandon, Suffolk.

Since Life Peerages were initiated in 1958, most peers would choose titles that went : Baron - surname - territorial designation. Ashby simply took his territorial designation from the place where he lived. He could just as easily have used Bromley (his place of birth) as his TD.
