Yorkshire Parish Records on Ancestry.com
« on: Sunday 05 August 07 15:38 BST (UK) »

Hi All

Quite by accident yesterday I found hundreds of Yorkshire Parish Records on Ancestry.com. I am not sure if these records are free, because I have a subscription to Ancestry.co.uk, but this is the link
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8020&offerid=0%3a7858%3a0

If it doesn't work you can go into Ancestry.com and search the card catalogue for Yorkshire Parish Records. It's not easy to find but you will get there in the end.

I already had my husband's family back to 1819 and with the help of the birth, marriage and death records for Eston Parish I have managed to get the family back to 1591.

Hope this information is helpful.

Good luck.

Ruby

Just checked and the link works!

I agree - lots of Yorkshire parish records that are almost worth subscribing to Ancestry for!

My problem with Ancestry (apart from the censuses which I buy credits to view) is that I just can't seem to navigate my way round it to find out exactly what PRs they do have.

I followed your link and - yes - found lots for Yorkshire. You mention the card catalogue - could you explain where I find this and how I search it e.g. to discover if they have any PRs for Berkshire?

Ancestry is pretty much a closed book to me because I refuse to fork out for a subscription when I've no way of knowing what I'm getting!  Cry

Glad to share!

Couldn't believe it myself - was on the computer for hours yesterday and then sat down surrounded by papers to double check I had got the right children with the right parents. Didn't get to bed til gone 3 am!

Needless to say my husband is absolutely delighted, he's got 4 generations more than me now!

Cheers

Hi Jill

Go into Ancestry and click on Search on the top bar, then on the right hand side there is a box entitled Search Resources - card catalogue is underneath, click on that and search for Berkshire Parish Records.

Good luck.

Ruby,

Thanks. At last - a way of discovering what PR coverage Ancestry has. They don't exactly make it easy to find, do they - or perhaps it's just me being dense (no comments please, I'm easily upset!!   Cry)

A quick look at other counties and they don't appear to have nearly as good coverage as Yorkshire, but at least now I know where to look!

Hallelujah!   Roll Eyes

I am not sure if these records are free ...

Sadly, they are not - I can't perform any searches without the dreaded "you have tried to access something which needs a subscription. Take advantage of our offers ..." etc.

Hi Mansfield Terrier

If you tell me which Parish and what name I'll have a look for you.

I don't have a lot of time - part time job, grandchildren, ancestors, a half life etc. but if the parish is there and the name I'll give it a good go.

Cheers

Hi Ruby

Kind of you to offer, but I was really just going to mooch around in there, with no real aim other than to see what I could find! I would have been looking for Pashby in North Yorks - Levisham, Hackness, Harwood Dale, Scarborough - but I don't expect to unearth much that I don't already know.

Ruby,

Can I be cheeky and jump in with a couple of requests?

The first is in Cherry Burton - the IGI has a marriage on 24.3.1789 between Richard Tindle and Lucy Dukes. Is there any further information - especially does it say if Richard is a widower?

The other is in Blacktoft. Is there a marriage between Thomas Tindale (Tindle/Tindall etc) and Sarah between about 1790 and 1808?

Thanks a lot,
Jill

Hi Jill

I've had a good rootle around and this is what I have found:

Cherry Burton records exist from 1561 to 1740 only - so no luck there.

Blacktoft records exist from 1700 to 1812 (those prior to 1700 were destroyed). There is only only one Tindall marriage and that is for John Scott and Ann Tindale on 29th November 1804.

I also searched loads of Yorkshire records for Tindall marriages and I have a list if you want it - you need to send me an email address as the list is too long for here.

Despite all this, I have only found records for four Thomas and two Richards.

1. Thomas Tyndall and Mary Dalton Settrington 23.1.1689
2. Keiza wife of Thomas Tindal buried 7.4.1693 Terrington. Thomas buried 8.5.1699
3. Elizabeth wife of Thomas Tindal, fustian maker Manchester 29.12.1788 age 20
4. Thomas son of TT fust mkr Man 18.1.1789 age 9 mths. Both at St Mary Bishophill Junior

1. Richard son of Rbt Tindale bap 8.8.1756 Settrington
2. Richard Tindall witness to the marriage of Wm Fawcett of Birdsall and Sarah Tindall 2.4.1806 Carlton Juxta Snaith

Whilst looking I also spotted a couple of Dukes

John Duke of Rotherham and Ann Varah 11.5.1761 Maltby
Thornton Duke and Elizabeth Towns 29.9.1788 St Martin, Coney St., York

Hope this information helps in your search - if you want the list, please let me know.

Regards

Ruby

I almost forgot, there is a Richard Tindle on Family History Online, born 28th November 1780 in Pontefract, St Giles. Father is Edward and the abode is Knottingley.

Thanks for looking, Ruby.

Most of my Tindals came from North Newbald and I've actually checked the original PRs at the Records Office - really funny feeling, handling something that was used to enter your ancestors' details up to 300 years ago!

Shame about Cherry Burton. Still, it's never that straightforward, is it?!

The Thomas Tindal/Sarah marriage is a bit of a mystery, but at least now I know it didn't take place in Blacktoft which, according to the IGI, is where Sarah came from.

It's really kind of you to offer to send me a list but I don't want to put you to any more trouble and - as I say - I think I've got most of them in North Newbald.

Thanks again for taking the time to look those up for me - it's much appreciated.
