Hi I wonder if someone could have a look to see if there is a marriage or burial for Mary BREED baptised Southill 1st Aug 1790 please?
I have a baptism Sophia BREED 11 Oct 1812 Southill mother Mary BREED and subsequent burial of a Mary Breed at Southill on 25 Oct 1812
and am trying to work out if it possible for this Mary Breed to be the one baptised 2 MAR 1788 in Sutton parents Thomas and Elizabeth (there is no marriage on the IGI for a Mary Breed in Sutton) Is there a burial on the NBI for her?
Thank you Jan

Hi Jan
There is no burial in Southill up to 1812 of the Mary Breed baptised in 1790, nor is there a marriage in Southill. The 1812 burial has no additional information
Similarly with the Mary Breed baptised 1788 in Sutton - there's no Mary Breed buried in Sutton nor is there an obvious marriage on the IGI
On the face of it the obvious conclusion may well be the right one, although you might want to check if there's anything in the overseers accounts in Southill. I cannot find anything on A2A or BLARS.
But I've just found the following entries in Samuel Whitbread's Notebooks
Sunday 19 Dec 1813 John Payne of Potton about his bastard child; child chargeable to Southill; arrears due to the parish from John Payne since the middle of March. Arrears must be made good and will then speak about the child. Ordered to return on Sunday morning and to bring what money he can
Sunday 26 Dec 1813 John Payne to pay 10s off his sum of £4 for the maintenance of his bastard child; agreed to pay 4s per week till the sum is paid off
Sunday 26 Jan 1814 John Payne of Potton brought £3 off his score of £4; wishes to have the child home. Ordered by letter Breed of Sutton to deliver the child with all its garments to the father (the overseers accounts for Jan 1814 show the receipt of £3-10s from John Payne of Potton for Mary Breed's child)
So it does seem as though the child was being looked after by a Breed in Sutton, which possibly points to Mary being from there rather than from Southill. But if she was from Sutton I don't understand why she wasn't removed back there when the Southill overseers found she was pregnant. A single pregnant woman who was without doubt going to be a charge on the parish usually wasn't allowed to stay very long!
I'm trying to see if there was any link between Southill and Sutton Breeds - I have a John Breed in Southill who married into my Southill Sabey family, although I believe without being able to prove it, that he was from Langford.
Later ..... The Langford John had a brother William christened 1755 who may have been the William father of Mary born Southill 1790
There was only the one Breed family in Sutton, Thomas and Lydia. There's a BLARS document in which Thomas Breed of Sutton was named as the eldest son of Pettit Breed of Biggleswade. If I am correct that the Southill Breeds were from Langford then any connection with Pettit Breed and through him to Sutton, is getting tenuous. It would be nice to find something about the Southill Mary so that she can be eliminated!
Regards
David

Thanks once again David for all that information.
If baby Sophia was being looked after by a Breed (shame no first name given) in Sutton it does imply a connection between the 2 branches whether or not Mary is the Southill or the Sutton one. That John Payne was from Potton seems to make it more likely Mary was from Sutton rather than Southill but as you say it is strange that if she was why was she still in Southill when she gave birth? Not sure what the situation would be after her death if she was just staying with family when she gave birth - would the orphaned Sophia still be chargeable to the parish of Southill??
Yes I found the Blars document about Pettit - I had hoped he had a son William but none showing if he did!
Not sure why I'm getting so tangled up in this one - Sophia being the wife of a possible son of my 4x g grandfather's possible second marriage - but some things spark my interest

Know what you mean about things sparking your interest. I'm the same. Spend ages on trying to sort out problems that are not in my direct line (or even in other people's direct lines!) but I enjoy a challenge. And who knows, it's information that may be of help to someone's direct line.
As Sophia was already apparently orphaned by Dec 1813 then she would remain a charge to Southill, as pointed out by Sam. Whitbread

Hi Jan
The plot thickens. I couldn't find Sophia's maiden name but will try BREED. I did find lots of children but Amos is a new one. I will follow up Thomas and Elizabeth see where it gets me. I will let you know
Thank you so much for the information

Hi Cazanne I have seen the original entry for the banns called in Cockayne Hatley for James and Sophia's marriage, it is very faint but no doubt in my mind that her maiden-name is BREED.
James Carver was resident in Cockayne Hatley and Sophia Breed in Sutton (at least I am 99% sure that is what it says)
Banns were called Sept 25th, Oct 2nd and Oct 9th 1831
I haven't been able to establish whether the marriage ever took place
I am so glad all this is proving useful to someone direct line
Jan

Hi Jan
Thank you so much for that information. I haven't had time to do much in the past few months as I have been engrossed in an Open University course but now that is finished I will be back searching.
Once again thank you
regards

Hi
Happy to have helped. I've just come back from a couple days spent in the Bedford Archives so thought I'd look in the Sutton marriage registers to see if the marriage was there - it nicely confirms her maiden-name as Breed and place of residence at time of marriage
