Hoping someone can help. I have a Mary Ann Richardson, born Durham, but moved to Whitehaven with her mother (also Mary Ann Richardson) after her father died in 1873. She met and married Thomas Butler (born Leeds, Yorkshire) in Whitehaven. My problem is that she is living with him and has his surname of Butler on the 1891 census, but she didn't marry him until 1899. They had 5 children Mary T b1885, Thomas G b1887, Ann B b1889, Agnes b1890 and Arthur b1897 (the second initials aer not present on the 1891 census but are on the 1901 census. They also do not seem to be on the BDM indexes either). The children all have the surname Butler on the 1891 and 1901 census, but I've just discovered from another source that the eldest daughter Mary married someone called Uriah Price in Cumberland. They assumed she was a Butler at the time but having done a bit of digging, Uriah Price married Mary Richardson in Cockermouth in 1904!! I now don't know whether the children were registered with Butler as their surname or Richardson. I thought I'd found references on the BDM Index for them as Butlers, but now realise that there are also Richardsons with the same names in the right years in Cumberland. I'm hoping someone else is researching the Butlers and may be able to shed some light.
