Price/Richardson marriage Cockermouth
« on: Monday 06 August 07 22:16 BST (UK) »

Can anyone help me by looking up this marriage in the appropriate records office.

Uriah Price to Mary Richardson Q2 1904 registration district Cockermouth.

Uriah Price was apparently born in Lancashire in 1885, but I can't find a birth record, even though i can find him on teh 1891 and 1901 census.
Mary Richardson was the daughter of Mary Ann Richardson and Thomas Butler, but they weren't married at the time of her birth in 1885 (they married in 1899).  She was born Wigton, Cumberland 1885 and I thought she was registered a Butler but if the info regarding Uriah Price is right then she was registered a Richardson.  There are two births that could match for Mary in 1885.  Mary Richardson Q1 Wigton 1885 and Mary Butler Q2 Wigton 1885.

If i can get the info from the marriage it night me help me to bottom this one out.

thanks in advance

You need to know which church they married in to look at the original record.  The GRO ref is only applicable to applications to the GRO for a copy cert

Uriah Price snr married Elizabeth Horton in 1882

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1882

PRICE Uriah HORTON Elizabeth Salford St Augustine Salford C14/1/197

Carole,

Thank you for the info on Uriah snr.

i have no idea which church Uriah jnr and Mary would have married at.  All I have is the addresses they were living at in 1901 from the census.  Mary Butler/richardson was living at 12 Nelson Street in the parish of Netherhall, district Maryport, borough of Cockermouth.  Uriah was living at Lucock Row, Broughton Moor, Cockermouth.  Previous generations of Richardsons lived and married in Whitehaven and they all married at St James, Whitehaven which I think is C of E.  Would that help at all.

Thanks again

Thanks for the link Geoff - some good pictures of St James on there, but I don't think Uriah and Mary would have married there as the marriage is registered in Cockermouth.  When previous ancestors married in St James, Whitehaven it was registered on the GRO as Whitehaven.  Also it would seem that Uriah may have been catholic (his parents married in a catholic church in Lancashire)- so they could have married in a C of E or Catholic church in Cockermouth.

Thanks again - I've saved the link as a favourite as I would like to get to Whitehaven to do a bit of digging around at some point.

Yes, I forgot about the Cockermouth bit  Roll Eyes

I had some ancestors who married (in 1864) at St Patrick's RC Chapel, Maryport.

Geoff,

No worries  Wink (that's a wink and a smile - I can't get the smilies to work!!)

Yes I was hoping that if I said C of E someone might know which churches would be a possibility.  The catholic link I mentioned is also a blind alley as I now know that what i thought was a RC church, is also an area of Salford I think as there's a C of E school and an Anglican church with the same name!!  The Lancashire indexes do not say which denomination the church is that Uriah snr married in without ordering a certificate, and if I have to do that I might as well order the one from Cockermouth.  I was hoping that someone may be able to lok it up to save on costs - tracing ancestors can get quite expensive if you have to order certificates for everything!!

Thanks for your help anyway

Toni,

I guess it might have been, I've only got the census info to go on and the word of a contact from genesreunited.  She doesn't have another name listed, but I can't find his birth record.  His father was also Uriah, born 1863 Wrexham, Wales and whilst he's listed as Uriah on the 1891 census,  his name has changed to Hugh on the 1901 - could be a type-o or simply the person writing could have misheard.  I can find some of Uriahs (1885) siblings - there's a florence and a margaret that match the census years, listed on the lancashire BDm index but not him. It's a mystery.  Uriah H (horton) q4 1912 is the son of the missing Uriah.  I guess if no-one can look up the marriage for me then I'll have to order a certificate and that may solve both anomolies.

Thanks for looking for me  Smiley

Regards

Nadine
