www.counter.rootschat.net
Do you know how many people have visited your page? If you would like to know how many visits your new webpage has received, and provide a link back to RootsChat too, then add the following piece of code to the first main page of your website:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="Javascript" SRC="http://counter.rootschat.net/counter.php?page=YOURUSERNAME"><!-- //--></SCRIPT>
Change the "page=YOURUSERNAME" accordingly to your webspace username.
If you want to track other pages on your website then add a number straight after the YOURUSERNAME part. (no spaces)
Example: let's say your username is 'mywebpage' On index.htm you would use http://counter.rootschat.net/counter.php?page=mywebpage On someotherpage.html you would use http://counter.rootschat.net/counter.php?page=mywebpage2 etc...
Questions Can I reset my number? - No, just like the mileometer in your car
Can I have more fancy looking numbers? - We are stuck with white numbers on a black background
Can I use the RootsChat counter on a website not on RootsChat? - Yes, just change the YOURUSENAME to your RootsChat username, but put your username in CAPITALS
But how do I add the 'code' to my website? - You will need to add it using some kind of editor, like notepad - see the Free RootsChat Webspace board for ideas.
Where in my webpage should I put the counter? - You can put it wherever you want really, but it customary to put it at the bottom of your page, just above the </body> tag.
Can I hide the counter so only I can see it? - If you can work out a way of doing it, then yes.
I've added the script, but I can't see it - Check that "javascript" is enabled on your browser or "internet security" settings
Will you install it for me? - I'll have to let you try and add this for yourself, you'll feel quite pleased when you see your own numbers going up.
The webpage with an example is at: www.counter.rootschat.net [right]

Are you still wanting to insert a webcounter? You will actually need a HTML program (software) that develops web pages in order to do this.
I know, I know, Legacy makes your webpages and all you have to do is to upload the pages. But to insert any extra code means you have to open the Legacy pages in the webeditor (software like Front page or Dreamweaver) and paste the code in yourself, then save the page.
I use Legacy and considered using their webages, but then I decided, no it would just like every other Legacy made genealogy page online. I want to make something myself. So I taught myself HTML.
I had an excellent book that explained everything. I havent done any CSS or Java scripting at all - just the basic HTML. If I need a javascript code, I just copy one of the hundreds of them available online to be used. Since 2001, I have now made several very nice websites, on various subjects.

We're at cross purposes here. I know what you're saying, I know that's what you do. It's the actual method of doing it with the pages created by Legacy that I'm interested in.
I use Legacy to create my pages and it is easy. Just go to your index.htm page and insert the code for the counter as described in the first post. If you want it towards the bottom of the page then you need to stick it near the bottom of ll the text.

Hi
Me on a different thread. Where abouts on the first page of coding do I put Trystan's bit of code? I've already used my HTML editor to make a few changes

Best place is at the bottom of the page, just before the </body> tag.
A web counter takes a second or two to load (it's on another site), so if it's at the top of the page, then it's noticable, but if it's at the bottom (especially if you need to scroll down to see it) then you don't notice the delay.
