Hi Humbug

If you look at this rootschat thread you will see quite a few past discussions about how to organise paperwork.  A subject close to all of our hearts, I think  Grin Grin Grin Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Hi Humbug,

As far as certificates are concerned, I would recommend you buy two folders (one for maternal side one for paternal side) that have plastic clear view inserts.  I keep mine in date order and even have print out of names - dates that still await certificates etc.

I have found it a good way of keeping track of what you have and what you still have to look up etc.

Its one option at least...I'm sure there are many many more.

You'll probably find there's as many answers to that as posters! For what's it's worth here is my method. I use lever arch files - (separate ones for mine & OH's) divided into sections for
Births
Parish register baptisms
Marriages
Parish register marriages
Deaths
Parish register deaths
[Each of the above in chronological sequence]
Census records - separate section for each census then filed in reference order
Gravestone inscriptions (by location)
Wills (by date)
Other bits, eg directory entries, newspaper cuttings etc

In front I have a chronological summary for each direct ancestor listing birth, baptism, marriage(s), births of children, death, burial; interspersed with census entries if appropriate. I put locations, occupations etc against each entry and use a coloured highlighter to show those missing.

You could be radical and green by scanning the paper work and saving it in Family Tree.

But if you do, for goodness' sake, back it up somewhere!

I began all this with a simple index file in a shoe box. You can buy index cards in 2 or 3 sizes, and colours. I used pink for females, blue for males, green for witnesses and informants and yellow for anyone overseas.I used a card for every person I came across and added info from certs and censuses. Unfortunately my investgations outgrew my system!

You can probably use your program for all this. I have Family Historian but did not understand the instructions so it is still in the box! Embarrassed

Now I have at least 3 files for each family name - one for certs. in chronological order, one for census info. and one for notes, photos, passenger lists, etc.
With each name I have a 'rough' tree in progress and a neat copy.
I also usually have a folder with 'investigations ongoing' for each name.

For my main family I have separate files for births, marriages, deaths, and censuses.
I include IGI printouts for births before 1837, in the births file.

I also have a box for each family name where I can put odd items, printouts, info from internet, maps, etc and anything waiting to be filed.
I have a whole room for all this with DIY shelf units and shelves to keep everything on. Roll Eyes
I forgot! The large folder for wills. The older ones are often on A3.

It has taken some time and a lot of pushing from my daughters.
I had to clear 2 bedrooms completely Shocked
Got both decorated.
They did take me to a well known store to buy the bits and pieces.
They bought me some photo frames to match the shelves.
Then for my birthday they and their partners gave me a comfortable swivel chair too! Cheesy
They still think I'm in a mess.
Work in progress all over the floor Grin
