William HILLIER
« on: Tuesday 07 August 07 17:13 BST (UK) »

Hi

Can anyone please help me, I am looking for a William Hillier born 1855 or 1865 in Stourton Wiltshire. In  1861 and 1871 he was living with his grandparents William and Mary Middleton but there is a bit of a difference in his age. I think he was born in 1865 and have found him on the 1891 and 1901 census married to Elizabeth Ann  and living in Bristol Gloucestershire but cant find him in 1881.

Hope someone can help.

Thank you.

Molly

Hi Molly,

Can you tell us what certificates or confirmation that you have that confirms that William and Mary Middleton are Williams grandparents? If he was born in 1865 then obviously it cannot be him on the 1861/1871 census entries, on these two entries the birth place for William is given as Bourton, Wiltshire.

It would help if you gave us all the information that you are working from. There are many experienced people on here with  that may be able to help you with your family but it is difficult without knowing more details.

Kind Regards,

Frances Smiley

Hi Frances

Thank you for repling so prompt. I found on the C1851 William and Mary Middleton B1809. They had a stepdaughter Mary Ann Hillier B1829 and stepson George B1835 both in Stourton not Bourton this is the wrong spelling.

Can you check the C1861 and 1871 for the Middletons, and look at the dates of birth and ages for John and William Hillier they seem to be different.

I also found a Charles Hilliar (similar spelling) married to Susan in C1881 and they have a son William B1865 living in Stourton Wilts. Could you check Charles and Susan out in the C1871and let me know who the family members are?

I know my grandfather was William Hillier and he was born in Stourton Wilts but I don't know if is date of birth is 1855 0r 1865 or who is parents and grandparents are.

Hope you can help.

Regards

Hi Molly,

The online  IGI has an extracted birth for a William Hilliar 18 September 1864 Stourton Wilts. Parents Charles Hilliar and Ann

On the 1861 census John is aged 8 and William is 6. Both down as born Bourton RG9/1290/72/4

The 1871 census image has the ages with an enumerators stroke across it, as best as I can see the ages are 18 and 16, John and William still down as born in Bourton.  RG10/1909/4/3

I will try and search for the other 1871 census lookup for Charles in the morning, there is a fight for the computer, husband wants the shuttle launch Roll Eyes

The only sure way of finding the correct family is by certificates I am afraid. I thought I was positive about my grandfather (he lived with us) so I delayed in double checking details on him, one of my biggest mistakes Huh

Hi,

This looks like the 1881 family in 1871, transcribed as HILLYEAR,

1871  RG10/1965  f.6  p.18  Stourton, Somerset
Town: Gasper.    Registration district: Mere
Fords Water

Charles HILLYEAR  39  Engine Driver               Wilts Stourton
Ann                     45                                        "  "    Zeals
John                    16  Flax Spinner                     "  "      "  "
George                14  Winder in Twine Factory      "  "      "  "
William                 7  Scholar                      Somerset Gasper
Lot                       5                                  "  "      "  "    deaf & dumb from birth

This birth seems to fit,

Hi Frances & Daisey

Thanks for all your help . It looks like Charles and Ann are Williams parents the date of birth ties in. The next stage is to order his birth cert to make sure.

Hi Molly,

Good idea, you will then be sure of the maiden name of his mother Smiley

Good Luck,
