Pillenders of Tedstone?
« on: Tuesday 07 August 07 17:33 BST (UK) »

Hello Everyone,
I am having trouble finding anything about an ancestor before her marriage can anyone help please.
Susannah PILLENDER married  Phillip Rostins 22 May 1820 St Andrews Worcester (from the Worcester Marriage index)
From 1851 census she was born in Tedstone Herefordshire and was 60  on the 1841 census she was 50 and from the burial register of Ombersley she was 63 on 2 Feb 1855. So her birth should be 1791
I just can't find any evidence of any other PILLENDERs.
Any help would be wonderful

It could be the name is recorded as Pilliner or Pillinger. And there are families of that name in East Herefordshire.

There isTedstone Wafer and Tedstone Delamere both near Bromyard.

At T Delamere there is a birth if a Susanna  PEELING daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth in August 1793.

Also married at Tedstone Delamere are Samuel PEALING and Betty ACTON in 1789, they had a son  James PEALING in October 1790.

I wonder if this is a case of the Curate's spelling and the Bromyard accent ?

There is an interesting article in this months Ancestors (Sep 2007) about surname spelling changes found in documents and remembering the way my Worcestershire Gran emphasized her Gs I can well see this happening. Now comes the question Which clerk was correct? Was Mrs Rostin (a name subject to several variations itself  Grin ) nee PILLENDER or PEELING? Huh

My own view having done a lot of transcription of Parish Records is that the Curate very often came 'from off' and would therefore not know much, apart from a mumbled name as a screaming bundle was presented for baptism in a gloomy Church. And so often is was obvious that they wrote up the Parish Rregisters at a later date, and the Bishops Transcripts on an annual basis rather as they went along.

Just think of how someone from that area would say the name and it gives a little flavour of what it may have been.

I think you are so right having found several strange happenings in registers myself. Can you give me the date of the Samuel and Betty ACTON marriage please?
