Each time I open up Rootschat I am treated as guest / not being recognised as frequent user, I clicked on "did you miss activation" but still have to log in, is this something that is happening to everyone, perhaps I missed something.

Hi Victoria
Same thing happened to me in the middle of a session yesterday - I made a note of it for Admin.
Luckily I could remember my ultra-safe password, lol!

Victoria,
From Wikipedia:
"HTTP cookies, sometimes known as web cookies or just cookies, are parcels of text sent by a server to a web browser and then sent back unchanged by the browser each time it accesses that server. HTTP cookies are used for authenticating, tracking, and maintaining specific information about users, such as site preferences and the contents of their electronic shopping carts. The term "cookie" is derived from "magic cookie," a well-known concept in Unix computing which inspired both the idea and the name of HTTP cookies."
...or to put in simpler terms, a small bit of data kept in the Internet browser so that it can remember things about you on each site that you visit, such as your Rootschat name and password.
Hence the question by dinie.
John

How do you make sure you have the necessary 'cookies' in place? My computer has recently been 'cleaned' and I am having problems with the 'Manchester Burials on Line' site, where I now can not buy any credits. They say I should have a 'pop up' but it's not there!

Isnt Logging In and out fundamental to the use of the Forum - hence the Icon to the left under any avatar ....
I always log out - then others can see I'm offline and not likely to respond for a while.
I think the site ofers 3600 minutes before an auto log out anyway ?
Kooky, if you've deleted all cookies, the next visit to the site will rebuild it.
The popup issue is more likely to be your problem - look in the relevant areas in your browser and or AV type applications at any security levels you may have preventing Popups
cookies « Sent to: Newf on: Today at 14:01:18 »
~~~~~~~~ Can you explain in simple non technical words of one syllable the meaning of your last sentence in your reply?
Re: cookies « Sent to: kooky on: Today at 14:27:35 »
~~~~~~~~ Not in words of one syllable I'm afraid.
Which Browser do you have - IE 5, 6 or 7 ? or perhaps Firefox ?
I'm most familiar with IE 6 (INTERNET EXPLORER Version 6)
Look at the Menu Bar on the top of your Browser Window.
It should read FILE EDIT VIEW FAVOURITES -TOOLS- HELP
Click on the Tools menu - there will be (and it will 'look' diffn for each of the above in terms of opening and reading the menu items) an item called INTERNET OPTIONS.
Click on this to reveal a set of 'Tabs' - click on the one marked PRIVACY - in IE6 at least, towards the bottom left of the mini-window that opens you will see POPUP BLOCKER.
Its fairly self-explanatory from there.
You may also have POPUP BLOCKING capabilty in any AV (Anti-Virus) application you have - Norton for example.

Hi Newf
When you Log-in it gives you the option to remain logged in for 3600 minutes or Always remain logged in. I use the latter, but when I leave the site it still shows me as "offline".
Doesn't help with the original query, but I hope it is a little bit enlightening!

Hi AR
I use the latter, but when I leave the site it still shows me as "offline".
Doesn't help with the original query, but I hope it is a little bit enlightening! How do you know you're shown offline, (w/o logging off) if you are 'gone'*
Cant remember the original query, but was trying to make the point about being shown as online or offline !
*Ah, maybe Tati has the answer

Newf, thankyou for your advice. I did what you said, pop ups were not blocked. Still no joy on Manchester burials site. I'll wait until I go to M/c and look them up for free at the library!
