EMERY Census 1841 - 1851
« on: Sunday 12 August 07 05:31 BST (UK) »

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if you might be able to help me.
I finally managed to find my great grandmother in a census and found out who her father was. I've been tracing the line back and have encountered a few issues between the said census years.

My great great great grandfather, Richard Emery was born in abt 1824, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire.
Between the 1861-1891 censuses he is living in London with his wife Sophia and children. He was a hand sewn boot/shoe maker for the whole of this time (imagine that!).

Anyway, I found a census record from 1841 that might be him, but I don't know enough about the geography of Bedfordshire at the time to be sure.

The record is in Potton, Bedfordshire and my ggg grandfather would have been 15. The head of that household is William Emery, who I am assuming is the father. He is listed as a shoemaker and Richard is listed as what I think is an apprentice. The reference numbers are
HO107/2/23/18; Folio 6; Page 6.

If anybody could help me decide whether or not this is my ggg grandfather I would be grateful as I'm really not sure.

I would also like to determine whether or not Richard is on the 1851 census, as he may have moved to London by this time. I have found a record that might be him, but none of the members from the 1841 household are there and the man's occupation is grocer's assistant which doesn't seem right. The reference is here anyway:
HO1071751/Folio: 565; Page: 51

Many thanks in advance for your help.

I  thought  those EMERYs were well researched...maybe not your branch?

please go the Bedfordshire Archives search site [blars adlb] and do ask them about Wills too?  And the Bedford Gaol site too [although I can see nothing for  Biggleswade  EMERYs]

Have a go at www.roots.web  family trees incase people have been recording your tree

Ok Cathy, thanks, I didn't realise, I had never heard the surname before my grandfather had mentioned it to me, I will have a look and see if they're in there.
Thanks again for your suggestions Smiley

I can't find anything on my line there (rootsweb)
Going to search the Beds Archives.

There are a few quite a few EMERYs on www.tribalpages.com
...I have a couple on my LOVELL page.  I think you may find Wills too if you email Bedford Archives as they were farmers in East Bedfordshire

Thanks for that Cathy.
Could you pm me the details of your tribalpages page? I've set a site up there now and I would be interested in learning more about your Emerys if that's ok with you Smiley
