Hi
I wonder whether anyone on this site is descended from the Payne family of East Grinstead.
I am looking for William Payne who was born about 1750 and married Sarah Durrant in Ringmer in 1770 and then had 6 children all in East Grinstead. He had a son Edward in 1780 who married a Jane unknown, the parents to John born 1807 in Lingfield, Surrey.
There seem to be crowds of Paynes in East Grinstead at the time and I wondered if anyone out there on Rootschat has had any luck trying to sort some of them out!

Can anyone tell me because East Grinstead always confuses me, where would the parish registers for East Grinstead be kept, Surrey, East or West Sussex?
Thanks

These days, East Grinstead is in West Sussex; the ancient parish was in East Sussex.
There is a OPC for East Grinstead

Thanks Chris
Of course, I just thought that SFHG may have East Grinstead records which would save be trawling all the way to Chichester.
And I will check out the OPC too

Hi toni
I think I have checked familyhistoryonline for my William but I will have another look because I am not sure.
Apparently there are various families of Paynes in East Grinstead, presumably all from the same line originally, it would be ironic if they weren't.

I shall print it off and have a good look. You've been very busy! I've just had a look on familyhistoryonline, didn't find births but I did find burials and a couple of children's burials.
My lot appear to have lived at Legsheath, just south of East Grinstead (where there is a Payne's cottage today) and were in the 15 and 1600s iron masters.
BTW I have Hickmans too!

Hello Kerry,
ESRO used to have transcripts for East Grinstead on the shelves, but I don't know if they have fiche of the originals. I suggest you e-mail them. They were very quick answering a query I had the other day.
WSRO certainly has fiche. The link below will lead you to the dates covered.
http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/libraries-and-archives/record-office/family-history/
The SFHG Library has fiche for: Baptisms 1662 to 1876 Marriages 1662 to 1875 Burials 1662 to 1867
They also have a photocopy of burials at Queens Rd Cemetery 1869 to 1901. For later burials you will probably have to contact the council.
The IGI coverage for East Grinstead is pretty good and I've not had a problem with the extracted entries myself. The batch numbers are on the OPC page.
That should save you contacting the OPC

Hi Phil
Am I right in presuming you are the Phil who is the OPC for EG who I have had contact with You very kindly sent me a page of burials. Went I went to the OPC page I recognised the name!
I will try ESRO, being so close I've not tried contacting them before but I certainly have WSRO and found them very helpful too. I have foundthe IGI extracted records very useful and found two possibles for William's baptism.
Thanks for the tip

That's why I didn't contact you, I already have
The burials you sent me by the way were very useful. I haven't been through all of them yet but some of them are tying loose ends nicely!

Hi tiddlypeeps
Welcome to the puzzle that is the Paynes of East Grinstead. Since starting this thread I have discovered I was actually looking at the wrong line of Paynes. Mine now stay in Lingfield a bit longer then came from East Grinstead with a Nicholas in the mid 1700s.
Is there anything we can help you with? I think Sarahmlife has Edward and Elizabeth Young in her tree.
