Thought I would just add some more Paynes, but of 19th century;

I have in my tree an Ann Cowdry who married a Richard Payne [of Forest Row, East Grinstead], on 13 November 1850 in East Grinstead (according to the IGI, which had transcribed her as Ann Cowdey), and marriage registration in 4th quarter 1850 East Grinstead (cert not obtained).

1871 At the Swan Inn, East Grinstead  Sussex.  Payne mistranscribed as Rayne
Richard Rayne born by my calcs abt 1827 Forest Row, Sussex, Head 43, Publican
Anne Rayne born by my calcs abt 1829  Burstow, Surrey, Wife 41
Richard Rayne abt 1853  Godstone, Surrey, Son 17
Joseph Rayne abt 1858  Banstead, Surrey, Son 12 Scholar
Thomas Rayne abt 1862  Banstead, Surrey, Son 8 Scholar
Anne Rayne abt 1863  Banstead, Surrey, Daughter 7 Scholar
Percy Rayne abt 1864  Banstead, Surrey, Son 6
Thomas Rayne abt 1810  Marshfield, Sussex, Servant 60 Ostler (Thomas Tester on original)
Mercy Smith  abt 1854  Horsted Keynes, Sussex, Servant 16

Richard's occupation in 1851 was boot and shoemaker (living in Godstone Village, Surrey)
Cannot find him in 1861
1871 he is a publican
1881 he is a Master Cordwainer and has moved from East Grinstead to Tunbridge, Kent
1891 in Tunbridge as boot and shoe maker again
1901 in Tunbridge as boot maker

Their children were born in Banstead Surrey and some grandchildren born in Tunbridge Wells Kent.

I just wondered if there is anybody here researching this family.  Also wondering if anybody has any idea as to who the parents were of this Richard?

Hmm unfortunately Forest Row does not good coverage on the SFHG database, and 1827 is not there.  The IGI has two born 1827 but both in East Grinstead.

Was his birthplace for all censuses always Forest Row or could he actually be one of the East Grinsteads ones?

Thanks Phil, and Hi Kerry,

1851 he's shown as born East Grinsted [sic]
1861 cannot be found anywhere at all - neither him nor his wife nor any of his children but would have expected him to be Banstead, Surrey
1871 he is a publican in East Grinstead born Forest Row
1881 he is a Master Cordwainer born East Grinstead and has moved from East Grinstead to Tunbridge, Kent
1891 in Tunbridge as boot and shoe maker again born in Forest Row
1901 in Tunbridge as boot maker born in East Grinstead

In 1841 there are a few Payne families enumerated immeditatley next to each other in Church Lane, East Grinstead including a John Payne and Susana.  In that group there is a 14 y.o. Richard Payne occupation Apprentice Tailor but in the Payne family two doors away (Richard and Mary both aged 35 and son George aged 7) the Richard aged 35 is a shoe maker.  John and Susana had a son Richard baptised in 1828 in East Grinstead.

On the other hand in 1841 still in district 1 of East Grinstead in another place there is a Henry Payne aged 45 who is a shoe maker with his wife Dinah aged 50 with a Richard Payne aged 14. They had a son Richard baptised in 1827 in East Grinstead.

With the trades of the respective families being the same I was a little stuck but in 1851 the Richard Payne apprentice tailor is still a tailor and enumerated in Croydon (33 Surrey Street) with his sister Mary.  My Richard by then is in Godstone.  I could assume therefore that my Richard is the son of Henry and Dinah.

So I answered part of my own question there, but would still interested to hear from any others others researching this branch.  Smiley

Hi Penny

Interesting that they are all shoe makers, my Paynes all seem to be brickmakers,.  I wonder if this really is a way of sorting out the different East Grinstead Payne families or is it just misleading.

I had just found the 1851 census in Croydon for Richard so I think you are possibly right about him being the son of Henry and Dinah.  Shame none of his children are called Henry or Dinah.  Undecided

Thanks very much Phil for the baptisms information - I'm opting for Parents Henry and Dinah, at Forest Row.  I have also just found the marriage of Henry Payne to Dinah Spencer on the IGI, and the name Spencer appeared in the baptism of their son Joseph who was baptised as Joseph Spencer Payne in Banstead in 1859.   So I now have a Diana Spencer in my tree Wink.

Kerry,

I dont have any rules or ideas about following occupations and I haven't researched the Shoe and boot-making industry especially at the time, but I did find something interesting with Brush makers.  Brush makers used to travel round the UK on a designated route (in an anti-clockwise direction (if I remember correctly) when no work was to be found in their current environment.   So if some were not found in Lambeth at a certain time in the censuses then they might have been found instead in Witham Essex!  If you are interested there is more information about their travelling habits by searching for the Society of Brushmakers.

Regards,
Penny

That is interesting and presumably would be true of other itinerant workers.

Hello I too am a Payne descendent. I have them in East Grinstead back to the mid 1600s with John and Elizabeth. They had at least 7 children:
Elizabeth Payne
1686 –

John Payne
1688 –

Katherine Payne
1692 –

Judith Payne
1694 –

Thomas Payne
1697 –

William Payne
1702 –

Richard Payne
1704 –

Many of mine were bootmakers, including Frederick Fortune born 1837 and his father JOhn born 1793 was a master boot and shoe maker.
