Hi Pauline and welcome

My Paynes were in Lingfield a lot later on but seemed to cross the border from East Grinstead and West Hoathly, I've only got back to 1700, they may have come from Lingfield in the first place.  So it is worth checking both those places too.

Of course not forgetting that Lingfield is very close to the border with Kent also and they may have gone that way - Edenbridge for instance or Marsh Green which is literally down the road from Lingfield is in Kent.

Lingfield is a beautiful village with a lovely church and a fantastic library but a pain to research  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Hi pauline Smiley,

The payne families from east grinstead, Lingfield, kent etc are quite interesting to research, I think there are 30 diffrent payne/pain/paine familys overall, I've been researching my paynes for 3 years now, Ive also got back to 1700, my lot come from East Grinstead and before that from Chichester. My 2 x great granddad was Edward Payne who was born in East Grinstead in 1815 he married a Elizabeth Young born 1813 in Horne Surrey, which is bout a mile up the road from Lingfield, their lived in Crowhurst near Lingfield from 1841 to bout 1861 at the brickfields there, Edward was a Brickmaker, and when the family moved down to Warlingham surrey, with my great granddad Eli Payne, edward owned two brickfields in Warlingham and Eli Carried it on afterward his dad died.

Hi Sarah

Hope you are well!

Interesting that, because my Paynes were brickmakers.

Crowhurst near Edenbridge  Grin

Generally the Paynes were concentrated in that general area with a few exceptions.  There are also a Payne family in Burwash but I don't know whether they link at all.

Sorry to say I don't get chance to come on here very often, so I'll take the chance to add what I have so far here.

My Pain/Paine/Paynes in Lingfield start with Richard who married Elizabeth White in Lingfield in 1690, so I'm guessing he was born about 1665.  They had Richard 1694, Elizabeth 1696,  John 1698, Susan 1700, Robert 1702 and possibly two other children, William and Mary.  I'm descended from Elizabeth, who married John Knight in 1720 in Lingfield.

It doesn't help that there are two separate Richard Pains having kids baptised in Lingfield at the same time, and no mother mentioned in the registers.

Still, I suppose it all makes life interesting.  Several of my other Lingdield families seem to cross over the county borders for a while.  Seems Worth and E. Grinstead in Sussex and Edenbridge and Cowden in Kent.  Looks like a visit to Maidstone CRO might be in order.

Hi pjgirt

I don't know whereabouts you are, but a brilliant resource for Lingfield research is Lingfield Library, they have the parish registers there on computer and transcripts and very helpful staff.  I spent a couple of afternoons there earlier in the year.

Hi Kerry

I actually live in Reigate.  I've been going over to Woking History Centre as actually it's easier to get to on public transport than Lingfield!  I do agree Lingfield is very helpful though, and in a lovely old wealden house.  I can't drive at the moment, as I have sight problems.  That's a real bind, having to rely on other people to take you places.

Would anyone be interested in the Lingfield parish register entries I've found?  If so, I'll try to get them listed out and put on here.

All the best

Hi Pauline

You are indeed lucky then to be able to visit Woking, I visited once about 4 years ago and was really impressed by it, problem is from my part of East Sussex the journey is so tortuous I haven't bothered again.  So I go to Lingfield instead.

Actually Woking is probably easier on public transport for me too, probably take up most of the day though, I shall have to check it out.

I'd certainly be interested in the parish register entries. I shall be popping off in a bit to go and have my flu jab but will return later  Lips Sealed

A lot of the entries were in Latin, but I've put them all in English (or my version of it!).  Hope some of it relates to East Grinstead, and it all makes sense.  The Lingfield registers arn't in very good condition and quite a bit missing, so I used the transcripts.

It looks like they were smiths and farriers.

Good reading

Thanks again Pauline.

Do your Payne family remain in Lingfield or do they move elsewhere?
