Sorry, Kerry, I don't know, I stopped coming forward after about 1730, as I was trying to find the earlier links.

Am I right you suspect one of them might be yours?

Possibly not, I've got back to Nicholas Pain born about 1710-1730 (haven't found his baptism yet) but possibly at West Hoathly.  Trouble is if I can't find his baptism I can't get any further back.  There is a possibility born 1710 but that makes him 30 years older than his wife Francis who was born 1739.  Grin

Hi Kerry Smiley,

The William Payne from Broadwater and ann weston was wrong, it turns out that my lot before their moved to east grinstead around the 1740's-1750's were from Brighton,East sussex, I got back to my 10x great to 1546, John payne who i thought was born in 1725 was the wrong one, it was john payne born 1728 in Brighton, his dad name was Thomas payne(1688) and his mum was Johannah Newton(1688) both born in Brighton.

Hi Sarah

Glad you are sorting it out now and if there is any help you would like let me know.  These Paynes seemed to like to pick the same names wherever they were.  I think someone wrote a book called 'Payne Children - what to call them'  Roll Eyes

Actually it was a joke  Embarrassed Grin As far as I know there is no such book.  But as I have John in about 5 successive generations I am sure they used the same names all the time.  Cheesy

Hi Poppy Mole

Welcome to Rootschat and welcome to the Paynes of East Grinstead  Grin

It is looking likely that my Pain line came from West Hoathly in the early 1700s but as yet I have not managed to find the baptism for Nicholas Pain about 1710 to 1730.  Its time for me to get searching again.

Is there anything you are looking for that we might be able to help with?

I'm wondering whether there may be a link to my Nicholas.  I shall have to check out those names at some point.  I havea possible baptism for Nicholas in 1710 but it makes him quite a lot older than his wife.

I shall hunt out my notes when I get a chance at the weekend.

There is a burial in 1711 in West Hoathly which I think must be the Nicholas Pain born 1710 so I don't think that is my man.  I have tried all the Sussex parishes I can think of on the SFHG website - Worth, Balcombe, East Grinstead, West Hoathly, Horsted Keynes, Lindfield with no joy.

I think maybe he was baptised in Surrey just across the border.
