Does anyone recognise this man?

Hi
Is there anyone who knows or has heard of in the past, a company called G L Harrison in Hull?
When my grandad joined the army in 1901 age 15, his attestation papers show that he was an apprentice at G L Harrison in Hull, but his indentures were cancelled. Whether this was because he wanted to join the army, or because he wasn't considered suitable I have no idea.
Thanks Liz

Thanks for that.
It is all a bit odd, as my grandfather was supposed to have joined the army when orphaned (he did that is true) and learned to play the oboe whilst in the army, however, on his attestation papers age 15yrs 5 months, he states his trade or calling as a musician, but also that he was an apprentice at G L Harrison for 7 months and the indentures were cancelled. As another rootschatter pointed out to me some time ago, an oboe is a very expensive instrument and she correctly guessed that he would have played the trumpet or something similar to start with.

Hi Liz,
Someone from Hull may know better, there were quite a few G.Harrisons listed in Bulmers 1892 but only 1 G.L. But if you want to wade through the directories at http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp you might find 1900s there
Maybe he really just wanted to be a musician and not a tradesman, or perhaps the firm just couldn't keep his apprenticeship open for him when he joined up, I don't know what the law about that was then - but how sad that he probably just joined up to have a roof over his head, and only 15 too

The roof over his head was probably one reason. His youngest brother age 8 went into an orphanage a few months later, when the eldest aged 21 also joined up. There were also 3 sisters, age 19, 17 and 11 at the time. Where they lived I don't know, I do know the 11 year old died 2 years later and the other 2 got married. The eldest was married by the time the young one died in the workhouse hospital, but there are no records of the young one being in an orphanage or workhouse before her death. All in all a very sad time for the 3 youngest children.
I do have a contact in Hull who I will contact when she returns from holiday at the end of the month. If she hasn't heard of Harrisons, I expect her father will have done.

Hi Liz, the same firm that Barbara mentioned also appears in the 1905 Kelly's directory for Hull, but not in the 1933 Kelly's.
