I plan to visit the Vancouver Library where all the BMD records that are released to the public are available on microfilm at no cost. The library staff are curently on strike but it looks like they may settle soon so will visit as soon as I can.
Post the names and I will obtain them.

hi

thanks for your offer!

the name is Martha Milne (maiden name Steele).

She was married to Robert Milne.

Her date of birth was14 apr 1874.

I think she died in between 1910 and 1911.

Is this enough information for you to be able to find it?

Have you checked 1911 census to see if Martha is listed with husband? It would certainly help to narrow down date of death.

i know that she died when her daughter was eleven and that the family then returned to scotland.

there is no sign of them on the 1911 census, i have looked on ancestry and i found them in 1901 but there are none of the family there in 1911.

unfortunately i can'tcheck the 1911 census for scotland but i am pretty sure they were back there by then.

also, i found a website which had details of burials in vancouver and there is listed a Milne, Martha who died in october 1910.

pretty sure this is her but i don't know where to go from here to know for sure  Undecided

hi

i take it back

i just found her entry on the death index for vancouver on ancestry and she definetly died on 31 oct 1910.  she had put her maiden name as her middle name so she was 'martha steele milne'

If you ever do need to purchase a BC death cert online use this page to search http://search.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/sn-28B78FE/gbsearch/Deaths and you can get a digital copy online for $19-95 canadian dollars.

Once you get the page up with the correct person, click on the newspaper page looking thing to the left of the name and then scroll donw till you see the words "digital copy".

But if someone has offered to look it up at the library for you,so much the better  Wink

Obits are usually wonderful in Vancouver too  Grin

Good luck

There are many deaths with the surname Milne, but only one Martha Steele Milne in 1910 and is the right age. It would appear this is the right one. If the family returned to Scotland after that event, I assume you don't think there is anyone else in the family who might also be in the records?

I will visit the library when the strike is over and get that certificate if you are interested. At the same time I can check the newspapers for an obituary. I don't know how long the library workers will be out. It has been near 4 weeks now but I believe they may be getting close to settling it.

Did you note that the previous entry on the BC Vital Records Death Register in the name of Milne is for Annie Steele Milne, 2 March, 1910?

There is a birth entry for Annie, born Vancouver, 9 April, 1895.

From the Canadian Census of 1901 I see that Robert and Martha are listed with three children who were all born in BC.

Milne Robert Male  Head M Nov 14 1872  28 Born Scotland Presbyterian Shipper
Milne Martha F      Wife  M April 14, 1874 26 Born Scotland
Milne Allirie S. F    Daughter S April 9, 1884 6 ( Annie, mistranscribed)
Milne Jas. S. M      Son S 20 Jan 1898 3
Milne Gladys F      Head S Mach 20 1900 1 ( The mistranscription of relationship has  been noted.)

The Canadian Census can be accessed at:
          http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html

The 3 birth and 2 death registrations can be viewed here:
         http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm

In the 1911 Census, Robert and the son, Scott are staying in a rooming house but I do not see Gladys with them.
