When did your earliest emigrant leave?

When did your earliest emigrant leave?

Mine was Joseph Hornsby, who left aboard the John Renwick in 1836, bound for South Australia. He became a publican. If he is my first generation Australian, my daughter is a 9th generation Aussie.

My emigrant ancestors, from Cornwall, England, Germany, Scotland and Wales all arrived in Adelaide over the next 42 years, the last being Henry Pike, of Pike's Oakbank Brewery fame, in 1878.

What's the story of your emigrant roots?

My earliest emigrant left in 1962 - not a very adventurous lot  ours -- unless you count one who was transported in 1840's -and even he returned after 7 years!!!

William Hicock (var. sp.) left England on the ship 'Plain Joan'

in 1635 and settled in Connecticut.

Many of his descendants came to Canada during the

American Revolution.

Lots of my New England ancestors arrived there in 1600s (including a lot on the Mayflower in 1620). Like Kathleen their many of their descendants were United Empire Loyalists invited to leave the country when they lost the war and they settled in Canada.

It was at one stage planned  to found a Loyalist colony in Australia, but by the time the government got organized about it, the Loyalist were already well established in Canada and were not interested, so they sent the convicts out instead.
