What occupation was George's father? If George was born in Aldershot (he gives circa 1863 on the 1881 census perhaps adjusting his age) his father may very well have been serving in the army at the time. If so, you should search for George's birth registration in the military indexes at the General Registry Office. Military births whether in England or abroad appear in the overseas section of the GRO indexes. They are not indexed on FreeBMD. You can find the overseas index online at
http://www.findmypast.com/home.jsp
or
http://www.familyrelatives.com/
Have you searched for George's birth in these indexes?
The National Archives will hold details of George's military record and his father's if he to served in the army.
Regards
Valda

Aldershot Hampshire would register in Farnham registration district.
George John Sandy (on his marriage in 1887) gave his age as 36 on the 1901 census, 27 on the 1891 census (where he is a police constable so Berkshire Record Office should hold his record and be able to give further more exact details on his birth) and 18 on the 1881 census. All three censuses clearly state his birthplace as Aldershot with a birthdate ranging between circa 1862-1865.
He does not appear on the 1871 census as George Sandy born Aldershot, If he does appear on the census, he was either out of the country, not enumerated ( or badly mistranscribed) or he is there but in another surname, possibly the one he was registered in, if his birth was registered and does not appear in the military overseas section of the GRO (not just overseas consular births etc).

Valda
