Does anybody have an old map of Whitehaven, around 1830, to do a look-up for me please?
Or does anybody know without a map whether Ribton Lane was near Ribton Moorside at Hensingham Square? Were there more houses at Ribton Moorside in those days?
That's a great help. I just took it that it was up in Hensingham.

Franz Schon was taken on as general manager and paid £500 for his goodwill and business contacts and he used that money to buy out Miss Tablin a week later. Fred Marzillier was appointed managing director in February 1940 after purchasing 490 of George Underwood’s shares.
They used an old cottage at Hensingham as offices and for production, then in 1943 bought a warehouse and cottage in Ribton Lane.
It was later that same year that Marchon took the step from being a cottage industry to a chemical manufacturer of international standing when it made its final move to new premises in the disused tar plant at Ladysmith Pit, near Kells.
This was from an Evening news and star article I found on google. (sorry, I can't attach links yet!!)
It does explain things. I did wonder why a sailor would be living up in Hensingham, when it would have made more sense to live near the harbour. My gr gr grandparents were living there around 1831 , but were at New Houses by 1835. Before that my gr gr gr grandfather died from there in 1830, he was the sailor.
