I would be very grateful for help finding information about my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Serena Clifford née Brimfield. Her husband Herbert Arthur Clifford died in 1900. She was born in Chelsea, Middx in 1868 and emigrated to South Africa (probably Durban) sometime after 1901 (she is in a census in England then) with four of her children (Hilda, Violet, Cecil and Arthur), her boyfriend (could be E. T. Paul) and the family silver! I have two scraps of a will that could be hers, giving a death in 1935 and mentioning a payment to be made to a solicitor in Durban. I do not know whether she died in England or South Africa - more probably S.A as I cannot find any trace of her in England. I have tried to find something - date of emigration, death etc, but no luck - could someone point me in the right direction please?! Many thanks.

Hi Tilly56
In the Pietermatitzburg Archive (near Durban) you will find her estate file :
MSCE 22491/1935 CLIFFORD, ELIZABETH SERINA. (BORN BRIMFIELD) (WIDOW). 1935 1938
Her Will & Liquidation & Distribution Accounts as well as a Death Certificate may be in the file. Look at the sticky topic of an example of a death notice to give you some idea of the info.
A quick glance in the Archive shows files which may be her children;
MSCE 145/1962 CLIFFORD, CECIL EDWARD. BORN IN ENGLAND. SSP MARIE BEATRICE CLIFFORD. BORN FREEMAN 1962 1962 MSCE 4006/1968 CLIFFORD, ARTHUR SETON. BORN IN SUSSEX, ENGLAND. S SP CLIFFORD, ANNIE MADELINE. (FORMERLY BLADES, BORN PARKES) 1968 1969
In the Pretoria Archive;
MHG 4017/57 STREAK, VIOLET ANNIE. BORN CLIFFORD. PREDECEASED SPOUSE CHARLES WILLIAM STREAK 1957 1957
Looking for a surname PAUL without first names will be very time consuming.
To order pics of the contents of the files or to search the Archive yourself, look at the first few sticky topics on this board.
Regards Moira

Hello Moira thank you very much for your reply - this is very interesting. Yes, these are her children (except, I think, Violet - she was Violet Ernestine, but maybe the "Annie" is a mistake). I'll have a look at the sticky topics to see about ordering pics. As far as E T Paul, is concerned - it's a bit of a long shot, so I think we can forget him! Many thanks again for all your help. Best regards Hilary
