A German RootsChat?
« on: Friday 17 August 07 16:34 BST (UK) »

This site seems to be the German equivalent to RootsChat (though on a somewhat more modest scale):

http://www.ahnen-und-wappen.de/foren/index.php

Has anyone with German roots discovered anything else like this?

Hi IGS,

thanks for posting that link.

I've been having a look and it looks interesting.

I'm wondering whether I should suggest a 'kulturaustausch', a cultural exchange - we put some of our "immigration from Germany" queries on their forum, and they put any "emigrated to England, or countries in our Emigrants board" queries on RootsChat.

I'll contact their webmaster and see what he says.

That would certainly come in handy. I don't speak or read German, but the site resembles RootsChat enough that, illiterate or not, I was able to register and to post a query (albeit in English).

Thanks for the link. Have also registered and noticed that some posts written in English have been answered (in English).

no reply yet to my email to http://www.ahnen-und-wappen.de/foren/index.php

I've registered with them, and put on a query which was answered fairly quickly.

I've now also registered with Ahnenforschung.org at http://forum.genealogy.net/forum/index.php

this seems to be a much larger forum, judging by the number of "new posts" per hour.
I've started two topics here, and both were replied to pretty quickly.

I made a similar suggestion to one of the mods there, about a 'kulturaustausch', a cultural exchange - we put some of our "immigration from Germany" queries on their forum, and they put any "emigrated to England, or countries in our Emigrants board" queries on RootsChat.

She likes the idea and will pass it on to their mods/admin to discuss.

More on this later !

First impression in both forums:
not so "welcoming" as RC, i.e. no "Welcome to ...", which usually happens in RootsChat, but, as I said, the replies came fairly soon after posting.  (Reminds me of my first impressions of RootsChat, before the "Lighter Side" started up  Grin )

The style in http://forum.genealogy.net/forum/index.php seems to be a bit more relaxed, on  ahnen-und-wappen there seems to be more of the the formel Sie for you; on forum.genealogy.net there's seems to more of the informal du

Thank you.

It´s true that in german genealogy-forums it is not usual to welcome new users. I don´t know why - in other german forums this is obvious.

I say welcome to them when i answer to their first post.

But I will tell your critisicm to the other mods. Perhaps we can create a new sub-forum to welcome the users. I like the idea!

One-Half of Dancing-Duo Waltzing Through 'TARDIS'.

Hello Bob,

I have been having a look at these two forums.

However, with my very limited knowledge of the German Language, I am not sure how I would get on.  I was able to make out a few words which are of course used, or are very similar in the English language.

Is there by chance a language conversion system attached to these websites, as I have used this facility on various other sites?

I would dearly love to get moving on my German Family History Research, with names like:
'ECKHARDT' / 'HUBNER' / 'TACKI'
areas including: Alsace Lorraine, Frankfurt, etc.

Hi Jeanette,

How about putting requests on the Immigrants board, a separate one for each name, with as many details as you have.

We'll see what the folks here can do, and when we have enough information, then I'll put a query on your behalf on Ahnenforschung.org at http://forum.genealogy.net.

Nathalie, a mod there, has already said that that would be OK.

Hello Jeanette,

you can write also your post in our forum in englisch. Many User understand it. If you put the post in the wrong category it doesn´t matter, we will push it to the right category.

Maybe Bob can write an instruction about the meaning of all our cathegorys and buttons in english. We can publish it in our forum and Bob can do the same here.

Hello Bob and Nathalie,

Welcome to you Nathalie.
Thank you both for getting back so quickly.

Great suggestions, plenty of food for thought!

I will have a think about which directions I will take.

Firstly, I will get my thoughts and research details together, then we can take it from there.

Thanking you both again,

Jeanette H.

Hi,
I'm one of the administrators of http://forum.genealogy.net.
To answer your question, Jeanette:
Is there by chance a language conversion system attached to these websites, as I have used this facility on various other sites?

Theoretically yes. Practically, it does not really work. Angry Even if you change your language in your profile to English, the buttons are still in German. We are working on a solution for that for quite some time, as we can see there is an increasing demand from English speaking users, mainly from North America, though. At least I didn't realize so far that there were many immigrants from Germany to the U.K., thought, most of them went straight to the 'New World'.
