LOCK(E) family of DOLTON

I have traced my Locke family back to Dolton in Devon. Silas Locke left Dolton in 1875 for New Zealand. He travelled with his brother Robert. They were aged 17 and 19 years and their parents were Richard and Maria (Clarke). What happened with the rest of the family back in Dolton?

A warm welcome to RootsChat.

I have found a Robert Locke aged 17 of Dolton in 1871 with parents Richard a mason and Maria aged 53.
THere is no sign of Silas. Is this the right family? If so I will follow them up in 1881 etc for you.

Hi gemstone

I am still looking through the post 1871 census for your Locke family, they are proving rather elusive!
However, I have found a Louisa Locke marrying a John Potter in Sept 1873 Honiton 5b 53 on freebmd.
(On the 1871 census she is listed with Sophia as a 12 year old twin.)

I think I have found elusive Sophia Locke unmarried in 1881 living as a servant to John and Sarah Fisher in Garston Devon.

Thanks, you all are on the right track. I have the 1871 census details and you have identified the right people. Looking for anyone that may have a connection with the family that can fill in soem other gaps. It appears Louise(a) ans Spphis were twins. Aged 2 in 1861 census and 12 in the 1871. Could be her marriage in 1873 however aged 14, not always too young for those days but i don't know..... Thanks for the help.

there is a death of richard lock which would explain why he is missing from 1881.

think i found maria locke in 1881 census
RG11/2226/48/24.
the age fits with the 1861 census so does her birthplace and she is a widower.

Well done Wozzle you just beat me to the death reference!

I have searched Sophia and George in the 81, 91 & 01 census but have not had much luck.

You are right Gemstone, it is unlikely Louisa married at 14, I wasn't checking on the age!

It might be worth looking for them beyond the Devon boundaries now.
