Hi all
Anyone out there who can save my sanity?
Have a Charles (1826) & Ellen (1832) Pocock with children Harriett 1857, Benjamin 1858, Charles 1861, Maria 1865, Honor 1867( my gt gran) Edwin 1869, all listed on the 1871 census as coming from Shalbourne... some enumerators classed this as Berks, some as Wilts, so assume its on the border.
Free BMD has a marriage for Charles Pocock to Ellen Wilson in 1856 at Easthampstead.
Logic says that Charles, Ellen, Harriett and Benjamin should be on the 1861 census, but I cant find them anywhere.
Have tried entering just Shalbourne, then Shelbourne, then Pocock. Tried entering just Christian names, then birth years, still cant find anything.
There is an entry keeps coming up for a Charles Pocock b.1826 Shalbourne - but he's a widower with children Charles 1847, Henry 1849 & George 1853.
Would very much appreciate any offers of help tracking this lot down corndolly

An interesting one .,...
Free BMD has a marriage for Charles Pocock to Ellen Wilson in 1856 at Easthampstead.
Have you verified this marriage in some way ?
I've looked at the Images for the 'River' part of Shalbourne in 1861, and as you say the Charles Pocock there is a Widower, with an older family ...
The daughter Harriet fromn 1871 can be seen with Grandparents in Shalbourne in 1861 ...
My theory is that the Marriage you want is this one ....
Marriages Mar 1864 Blundy Thomas Pocock Charles Hungerford Vol 2c P333 Stroud Martha Watts Ellen do do do
Hungerford is the correct District (Easthampstead being Bracknell area) for Shalbourne ..
If so, Ellen can be seen in 1861, Shalbourne with a 8 month old Charles - she's a Widow.
RG9/723; Folio: 108; Page: 18 - Shalbourne
This 1864 marriage would account for the gap seen in the kids ages in 1871 .....
and she was born in 1832, which tallies with the 1871 Census.
I guess the way to prove it is to obtain a younger child's Birth Cert ...

Hi Newf
thanks so much, I completely missed that Hungerford marriage. Yes its far more likely to be the right one and of course explains the childrens ages.
That'll teach me to do things late at night when I'm half asleep!!
