I believe that this church in 1716 was "very ancient and in great decay and not anyways (with safety), to be repaired" and that there was a replacement church built possibly by Sir John Vanbrugh and,if so, would there be any parish records relating to this church? I have some namesakes who were supposed to be baptised there between 1766 to 1779 with the surname 'Turtchin' and I would like to confirm this but I can find no record of this church during this period. joboy
Thank you Meliora .... I did get those from the IGI also ... what I really needed to know was whether the church which was (in 1716) "very ancient and in great decay and not anyways (with safety), to be repaired" replaced by another ............ as I would like to obtain the parish records for the period of those 'Turtchin' births.

The church may have been in decay and hence demolished and replaced but it was the parish church of St Lawrence before and after the rebuild. The registers are held by the Berkshire Record Office. However, there are gaps in their holdings - including the first few years of the period you are investigating. See the BRO website for details.
