Agnes/Hugh (Caffie) Bruce
« on: Tuesday 26 August 08 15:37 BST (UK) »

I have asked for help with this family before and had some thoughtful replies. May I test your patience again and explain....

I have Agnes Caffie having an illegitimate boy in 1887 who is named as Hugh Caffie Bruce. By 1891 he is living with his grandparents Hugh and Elizabeth Caffie. In 1901 he is still there but in both he is named as Hugh Bruce. He is married in 1911 as Hugh Caffie Bruce to a girl named Margaret Johnstone.

His mother marries in 1901 and in the census for that year appears as Agnes Caig, wife of Samuel Caig.

What I seem unable to do is a.) to find Agnes in 1891 in the census either as Caffie or Bruce. It may be that the transcription is wrong - I am using Ancestry at present or I am simply useless!

I should also like to be able to look through the whole of the 1891 and maybe the 1901 censuses for Borgue which is where all this activity is going on but I'd have to do it on Ancestry - to use Scotlandspeople would be rather expensive....So my supplementary question is :- can one do this on Ancestry?

Apart from the above if there are other comments then I'm very ready to see them.

Hi Ken  Smiley

It is possible - just done it!

Put in Kirkcudbrightshire for County and Borgue under Parish. That's all and you should get the same alphabetical listing as I have (1122 people)

Alternatively, I've found that their 1891 index is not all that good and have found people on SP for that census who just don't come up on An*try.

Give a shout if you need any more help

Regards

I've just found a maybe but don't know all the details. I do know that she was b. Kelton from your previous posting re MIs  Smiley

Agnes Coffin, aged 33, b. Kelton,  dom servant to Rev Henderson, Borgue Manse.

I  searched just using Agnes and no surname.

Gadget,

- it must be the same Agnes. I usually demand three things that tally. Here the first name, the birthplace, township where she lives and her age (born in 1858) all fit. Given that she had had an illegitimate child four years earlier and I know where that child is living then it all fits nicely.

I hope you FEEL as clever as I think you are. Thanks - and I still haven't finished with my Davidson family....so I'll be back I'm sure.
