Parish records - microfiche?
« on: Monday 20 August 07 16:20 BST (UK) »

I'm looking at possibly purchasing parish records for Stretham which is where my family come from - but I'm not sure what microfiche is?  Am assuming that you need some sort of machine to read them?

Can anyone help me?!   Smiley

Microfiche is a plastic film with photographs in very small form that require a microfiche reader to view them or a very powerful magnifying glass.  On one fiche (depending on the size ) you can have upwards of 12 pages of a parish register printed.  Fiche readers run second hand on ebay from about 40 quid but you can if your lucky pick up a hand held for between 10 and 20 on ebay.

I use a 20x magnifying glass, which can get a bit uncomfortable!

Some libraries have microfiche readers.I have Stretham PRs on fiche so can check  the index to see if there are many entries for your family if that's any help.

The fiche look a bit like film negatives and are about the size of a postcard.

Hi - thanks that would be great if you could check the parish records you have - the name is Lowe, they were agric labourers and millers.

There are quite a lot of Lowe/Loes in Stretham PRs-starting from 1593 and going up to at least the 1940s so looks as if it would be worth buying them.
