Hi Sue
The 1901 Census shows Thomas as being aged 12 not 2.
There is a death for a Sarah NEEDHAM aged 5 in 1891, Greenwich ( which covers Deptford St Paul ) which maybe the daughter who appears on the 1891 Census aged 4.
On the 1901 there is a John NEEDHAM born about 1876, Deptford, living with his wife Margaret, and children George and John in Deptford St Paul, London. Occuaption was Lab in Brass Foundry.
No sign of John though sorry
Cheers Karenlee

No worries
Just because Ann is listed as "married" on the 1901 does not mean that John is still alive. Sometimes they did still list themselves as such for a short while after their spouse had died. Not sure why, but have come across it occassionaly.
Happy to help

Hi Sue,
I'll just cross-reference the other thread about this family as it might help anyone doing lookups. It is at: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,251196 and lists the 1881 and 1891 censuses, and also the date of birth of George William NEEDHAM (Mar qtr 1877) - 1909 was the year he married.
The other children would all be grown up by 1901 so might well be working elsewhere - or married and in households of their own.
Regards,
JAP

Sometimes yes. Usually they did note if the parent was deceased on the marriage cert, but sometimes not. I have personally had incidences where the father had died some time previously and it was not noted. Took ages to find them on early Census as the mother had remarried ... pain in the proverbial sometimes.
Check out all the available avenues is all that I can say. Chances are that John will turn up on the 1901.... but be aware that he may not either.
Isn't this fun??

From FreeBMD, a couple of possible marriages for the girls?
Susannah Marie/Susanah Maria NEEDHAM marriage Sep quarter 1891 Greenwich; a William FIELD is on the same page. (A Susannah Maria NEEDHAM was born Dec qtr 1871 Greenwich. A Susannah aged 10 was the eldest child in the 1881.)
Rebecca NEEDHAM marriage Dec qtr 1897 Greenwich; a Henry Charles CHESTERMAN is on the same page. (A Rebecca was born Mar qtr 1873 Greenwich. A Rebecca aged 8 was the second child in the 1881).
As Karenlee says, sometimes - but not always - a marriage certificate will have 'deceased' against the name of the father(s). If the Minister/Registrar didn't ask, and nobody volunteered the information, then it wouldn't be recorded.

Hi Sue,
I guess you need to get a birth certificate of one of the children in order to find out the maiden name of John NEEDHAM's wife Ann. Probably that of your ancestor(?) George William NEEDHAM, birth, Mar qtr 1877, Greenwich, Vol 1d, Page 983. And then, if the John NEEDHAM/Ann SLEET marriage turns out to be the right one, their marriage certificate should give you the names and occupations of their fathers.
Unfortunately, none of this is cheap ...

As this is an old request it may well be resolved by now but, if not, with John NEEDHAM being a waterman/lighterman it could well be that he was working on the night of the 1901 census thus missing enumeration. There is a John NEEDHAM of the correct age born Deptford appearing in the 1911 census http://www.1911census.co.uk/
