BAKER of Shalbourne
« on: Wednesday 22 August 07 23:14 BST (UK) »

Hi all

not too sure where I should post this query.

Have a family called Baker  children all christened in Shalbourne.  Have found those details ok on IGI.  Now would like to find marriages.

Shalbourne is in Wilts, but very close to the border with Berks.  Later marriages have been registered in Hungerford, just a few in Andover.
Have put all the names through Pallots - no joy.  Any help much appreciated as usual.
Have managed to trace one - Elijah - through later census entries, but not these

Keziah Baker b.1795
Honor Baker b.1797
Sabina Baker b.1805
Jerusha Baker b.1807
Phealin Baker b.1812

I did think with some unusual names there it would be easy....

Hi corndolly

Don't know if this will help at all, but :-

On the 1851 Census there is a Sabina BROWARD born about 1806, Shalbourne Wiltshire.  She is living in Camberwell, Surrey with her husband John and children Jane 6 and Sabina 8.

Still looking

hi karenlee & Frances

thanks ever so much for your replies.

I had found an entry for the death of a Jerusha Harding in 1841, Hungerford and I'd seen the entry for Sabina Broward from Shalbourne, but didn't know how to establish if they were the right ones, given I couldn't find any reference to them other than birth  in either the IGI or  Pallots

Now you've given me another possible in Sabina Peacock and I still don't know how to establish if these were 'my' Bakers.

Do you mind if I ask how you found the marriages in '21 and '31?

I did actually put in Harding to see if it would work the opposite way.

Hi Corndolly,

Both entries came from the BVRI.

I discounted two marriages in Suffolk for a Honour and another for a Keziah, these were in 1829 and 1835.

Unfortunately Pallots, the IGI or Boyds are not complete, I have not yet found any of mine on Pallots or Boyds Sad

I hope someone will be able to look at the original records for you.

Good Luck,

Frances Smiley

ok, Phillimore Marriages is not complete but have found these:~

Kezia Baker of St Maurice Winchester m. John Yalden otp, residing in St Lawrence on 21.08.1808 by licence. - i ralise this is probably a bit early for your Keziah but she was married by licence, maybe becuase of her age.
there are 2 other marriages for a Kezia/h Baker 1798 in Kent and 1812 in Somerset.

there are 4 marriages in this index for a Honor / Honour Baker but again too early for your Honor, 1610 Cornwall,  1702 Dorset, 1778 Cornwall & 1798 Essex

no marriages for Sabine/a Bakers in this index or a Jerusha Baker

there was a Phebe Baker who married 14 March 1833 to  a John Atkins at St Peter Cheesehill Winchester Hampshire, John Atkins was residing in S Thomas.

like i say this index is not complete.

Hello. I have just come across your entry and I am a Baker descendant through Elizabeth Baker baptised in Shalbourne in Jan 1770. She married George Stockwell in 1799 and was my 3xg grandmother. I have quite a lot of information on the Bakers taken direct from the parish records and other documents at the Wiltshire and Berkshire ROs. I also have lots of Baker contacts across the world who may be able to help you. Some of the Bakers got involved with the machine Breakers and were deported to Australia and others emigrated there.
