can any one help with this family DONBAVOND
« on: Thursday 23 August 07 06:45 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I am trying to find anything i can about Margaret Jane Donbavond and her family. All i have is she was born in the June q of 1840 Registered Huddersfield Yorkshire (from free bdm's).
In 1862 she was in New Zealand getting married to William Henry Hargreaves.  Any census information or any information would be greatly appreciated please. I haven't been able to locate a death anywhere for her either (prob N.Z.)
Sorry it is not much to go on but it is all i can find so far.
Thanks for taking the time to read my request

I can't see Margaret/Jane on the IGI but DONBAVAND seems to be a Lancashire name.

I had a lovely thankyou all ready to post but you are all so much quicker than I at typing. This information you have all provided is wonderful. I have gone from nothing to a person with parents, grandparents and a possible uncle. What was a cloth dresser please?
I think given that i can't find that surname anywhere that these are the right ones. I still don't understand the giving of one name and then using the second ie Registered as Margaret Jane but on the census as Jane.

Just to confuse things ,theres this family as well in Huddersfield

James Donbavand 55 velveteen cutter
Sarah 55
James 30 velveteen cutter
Henry 22 ditto
Thomas 18 woollen spinner
William 15 ditto
all born in county
Deighton Huddersfield
HO107 1275/15 fol 32 p 20

Could be the family prefered Jane so thats the name they used.Or maybe wrong person but there doesnt seem to be a Margaret born that year on 41 Yorkshire census

Another question in the 1851 census it says Jane is a servant but apparently Ellen (her grandmother?) is also living in the house.
A bit more information according to the family search site Margaret Jane Donbavond and her husband William Henry Hargreaves had 2 sons, the 2nd of whom was given Fairhurst as his 2nd given name. (Submitted entry so i have posted on the New Zealand immigrants board as well)
Isobelruss  i had the above ready to post when once again i got a warning. What year was that last census please. I thought it was an uncommon surname but they are all coming out of the woodwork now.

Just to say thankyou, and let you know the Fairhurst Donbavand link is confirmed.
Isaac and Annie were sponsors at the baptisms of some of Margaret and William (Hargreaves) children. This is the link to the New Zealand post

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,251829.0.html

If any one can help with the other Donbavand or Fairhurst families mentioned as sponsors i would really appreciate a direction to look in.

Hi jody 101,
just thought i'd let you know that my mother and a great many ancestors were born and bred in Yorkshire and it was usual practice in many area's to give at least the first male and female born two names and they were allways known by their second name, ie: my mother Catherine Marion has always been Marion and most of my aunt's and uncles were known similary by their second name Huh....confusing i know but worth remembering when dealing with Yorkshire folk!
as a Brummie it still seems odd to me!

  cheers Tony

Thanks Tony,
my mother in-law did that to her children(thought she would start a new fashion) but she was 4th gen Australian.  It does make it very confusing though when you can only work with bdm's and census.
Do you know if there was a practice of naming the children? ie 1st son after paternal grandfather 2nd son after maternal grandfather.

It has all the possibilities of being him. The only problem i can see is that he was 20 in 1841 and 25 in 1851 (so i guess he rounded up for the 1st and then down for the 2nd)
It does cause a problem with the submitted entry though.
Is Ince near Altrincham in Cheshire?
