Russells of Cumbernauld
« on: Thursday 23 August 07 14:46 UTC (UK) »

Hello:)

I'm trying to find the family of Thomas Russell born Cumbernauld 1817. The IGI shows his parents as Thomas Russell and Mary Stirling. But in 1841 he was living with Margaret Russell born 1791. An aunt perhaps. Looking at the other Russells in Cumbernauld in 1841 there seem to be a lot of children living with other families. Had there been a nasy disease go through the town or something? If anyone knows anything at all about this family I'd be forever grateful. I'm new to Scottish research and finding it rather confusing.

I can't explain the relationship on the 1841 between the two.....and a death search for Mary Stirling Russell in Scotland after 1855 comes up empty.....but I think perhaps you should purchase the OPR image of his 1817 christening  on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk if you haven't already.  Perhaps his parents never wed.

Best wishes

Right, it looks like this was the case. I found the baptism on IGI showing his surname as Russell OR Stirling, good sign of a birth outside of marriage, I now think Margaret may have been his grandmother. I'll follow your advice.

It says:

"Russell, Thos & Mary Stirling had a child born in fornication, and baptised 16th Jan, called Thomas, for which Allan Stirling was sponsor"

Would that mean Allan was Mary's father or husband?
