Robert is shown on the 1851 and 1861 census in Edinburgh, with birthplace of Dundee. There's no sign of him on the 1841 census, and nothing on the IGI. Does anyone know of this man/family in Dundee? Many thanks.

Nothing on Scotlands People for his baptism in Dundee or Angus. This could be for various reasons - missing records, non-conformism (inc RC0 or just not baptised. Do you have any idea of his parents? If he died in Scotland Jan 1855 or after, you could pick them up from that.
Any children's names might help, given the Scottish naming conventions.

Dunbar Instrumental Band, c. 1910

Hi keebleancestors and Gadget,
Robert seems to have married Jane Lightbody on the 15th of September 1846 in Edinburgh. There's two children showing on the IGI for them; John born 22 September 1857, Edinburgh, and Robina born 9th July 1859, also Edinburgh. Another daughter, Jane, shows on the census, with a birth-year of c. 1850. Jane (born c. 1850) went onto marry Patrick Russell in 1870.
The last census I can find Robert in is 1871. I can't see his death straight away on SP, but wife Jane died 1877.

hume 24 has found the man I mean:) It's his parents I'm trying to find. I'm from his daughter Jane's line. I had the same problem as gadget, found nothing on Scotland's people.

Hi KA
This is very strange
I can't find a death for him, using various spellings and wildcards. He was alive when his wife died in 1877 - he signed the certificate
Is 1871/1877 the last sighting? he was a cabman. Did me move away from Scotland - with emigrant children, etc.?

All I can tell you on that score is that his granddaughter moved to London in about 1892. I don't know why, but it was probably for work. She's on the 1891 census in Edinburgh as an unemployed cook, next thing I know she's marrying in London. This line have given me endless trouble and seem to move city every generation.

Oh dear
He could be anywhere!
I've had a look at the Eng & Wales deaths but nothing very promising - a death for a Robert Jamieson, Dec q, 1891, Poplar, Vol 1c, Page 424 but nothing else. he doesn't appear on the 1891 in London though

I'm really more concerned with his birth than this death though:) He's beginning to look like an alien who was just passing through at this stage! I'm new to Scottish genealogy and it's all terribly confusing.

I see. English ones didn't give that information. OK. But we can't find it anyway:) I confess to still getting used to the Scottish system. What about the marriage certificate? Will it be on there? Where can I get Scottish marriage certificates from?

Hi Ka.
If you have a read of this thread:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,24468.0.html
It will give you much of the info you need. Full registration didn't begin in Scotland until 1855 but when it did, the certificates were fantastic - far more info than the Eng & Wales ones. Before 1855 you have to rely on Old Parish Records (Established Church of Scotland) and some other records.
The OPRs, 1855+registrations, will and much more are available to search and view online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It's pay to view but very reasonable.
As they were married before 1855, the info in the Church register will be variable.

Typical, it's too early for Civil reg, and I can't find it on Scotland's People under the OPR's.
Not sure about very reasonable, I've spent $50 there since Thursday................

hume found the marriage in 1846. Now I find it on the IGI, I didn't before...grrr....I'm sure it's the right one/right couple on the IGI, with the subsequent daughter Robina (a misprint for Rosina, I imagine, as Robert's granddaughter was subsequently named Rosina) but I couldn't find it on Scotland's people. Any idea why?

Never mind, I see why. I'd searched for Robert Jamieson, and it came up as Jamison. This is why I get through so many credits at SP.
