Jane Lightbody, born 1825 Dumfries
« on: Thursday 23 August 07 15:52 UTC (UK) »

Jane can be found on the 1841 census with her mother and siblings in Edinburgh, presumably her father was dead. Later censuses all claim her birth to have been Dumfries. Does anyone know about this Dumfries family? Many thanks.

Hi KA

Nothing on Scotlands People for Dumfries. I followed her mother and siblings to 1851 and find that her mother was Mary, b. Edinburgh circa 1801, Occupation - tripe shop ? owner. Davidson and John, her siblings were also b. Edinburgh. It might be worth following Mary through. her death cert would give her husband's name. Alternatively, Davidson or John might have married and this would also give their parents' names.

Regards

On the 1861, Mary is still in Edinburgh, now a Tripe cleaner. b. Leith. Davidson is married to a John Lamb. Davidson (only 2 years younger than Jane on the 1841) is b. Edinburgh.

Are there possibly two Jane Lightbodys  Undecided

Looking at your other thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,251909.0.html , I think that there were two Jane's. Jane's death cert cert of 1877 have her parents as James Lightbody, blacksmith and Jane, maiden surname Hogg . Both deceased.

Gadget you work so hard. It has to be James as the father because I know Jane's middle names was Hogg, so you have given me her parents. MANY thanks. You must be spending a fortune on Scotland's People for total strangers, how do we repay you?

Hi KA

I alway have a good supply of SP units but I never spend any without results - comes with judicious searching. The Census info comes free  Cheesy

I couldn't find anything on the parent's marriage but it might be worth you tring the IGI for their baptisms/marriages www.familysearch.org

I've been all over the IGI. It's a kinder search as it allows for spelling variations automatically without going silly like Soundex does. Ne'er fear. I'll persevere.

Hi KA

The IGI turns up 5 or 6 Jean Hoggs born Dumfriesshire  about the right time for Jane's mother - Tynron, Canonbie and Dumfries itself. Worth investigating  Smiley

Think I've got your James Lightbody, father of Jane,  in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire:

Baptised 24th January 1788. Parents - John Lightbody and Robina McCulloch

The two Jane Hoggs that look interesting:

9th March 1788 Tynron,DFS,  William Hogg and Florance Dempster
31 August 1788 Canonbie, DFS, William Hogg and Ann Graham

None in Wigtownshire or Kirkcudbrightshire around that time.

Yes, it's official. You're a genius. I also found on the IGI George Hogg and Janet Fingland. But whenever I try to confirm things on Scotland's People I can't find them.

Hi KA

The George Hogg/Janet Fingland combination had a Jean/Jane baptised Dumfries in 1802 on the IGI. This is a bit out for a birth of approx. 1825!

No, I've confused you. Jane Lightbody was born 1825. Her mother, Jane Hogg was born approx. 1791. The record I'd found was 1792, which would have been a good match, but I see , as you say, there's another one 1802, so they must have recycled the name. We'll just throw that one out:)

The 1802 one was the only one from IGI controlled extraction. The others were all patron submissions which have no LDS checks on their authenticity.

PS I think I got confused - I did start looking for Jane's mother, Jane, but then somehow meandered  Undecided

I don't think there are any checks on the extracted ones either actually, as I've found one of those to be entered incorrectly. It's like any other transcription, after enough hours pf reading that old handwriting and doing the data entry, eventually even the most careful typist will err. But as you say, some of the submitted records boggle the mind. Some go beyond inaccurate to the wildly fanciful......let's say wishful thinking. I've even see some that are complete goobbledegook. What bothers me most about the LDS site though, is the CDs it sells that contain mythological genealogies. With how useful the IGI can be and how glad we all are of its existence, and the kudos they get for it, you'd think they'd distance themselves from that sort of thing.

Too many Janes anyway.
