Regarding the search for Janet Mccaskill’s real mother, I think it might be Catherine Mccaskill. Janet was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire abt 1884. Janet was adopted by the McFarlane’s, at some point possibly with her sister Jessie, we have found records to say she was living with them at 7 years. Can any one help me trace her real mother & father?

The only birth I can see for a Janet McCaskill is in 1885 Coylton, Ayrshire, so obviously not the one you're looking for. Then again, I can't find this one on the 1891 census! Nor can I see a birth for sister Jessie (born around 1880 in Bonnybridge).
There's one Catherine McCaskill living in Stirlingshire at the time of the girls' births. She's aged 23 and born Bracadale, Isle of Skye. She's living with her parents, John and Eliza, in Larbert.

Have found Janet's birth:
Janet Philip Ferguson McCaskil - illegitimate - born 6h 0m a.m. on 10/5/1883 at Thornhill Road, Falkirk to Catherine McCaskil, domestic servant.
Cannot find Jessie's.

That's a great find, Annette.
I wonder whether the middle names "Philip Ferguson" provide a clue to the father's name.

Did check 1881 and 1891 Census - no Philip Ferguson anywhere in Scotland in 1881, and in 1891 there was a Philip Ferguson in Glasgow who was born England c.1858 with wife and children (who were born 1880's Glasgow).

Have now found Jessie (I'd been searching the wrong year). Jessie Baillie McCaskill - illegitimate - born 23 December 1879 at 7h. 30m. a.m. at Bonnybridge, mother Catherine McCaskill, domestic servant.

Thanks for the information.
Was Catherine Mccaskill definitely the real mother of Jessie? The story that we have always been told was that they were not related Jessie was adopted by the McFarlane’s with Janet Mccaskill who was my great great grandma. Is there any way of finding out who was Jessie’s father?

Do you know the occupation of Philip Ferguson? How would I go about tracing the adoption papers?

1. Catherine was definitely the mother of Jessie- doubt there is any way of finding out who her father was.
2. Philip G Ferguson was a Seaman (Engineers Rigger).
3. Personally, I doubt there was any formal adoption but if there was you would have to apply to the General Register Officer in Edinburgh.

The certificates I looked at on Scotlands People, the census I looked at on Ancestry.
1891 Census - 102 Bain Street, Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire
Philip G. Ferguson Head bc.1858 England Ann Ferguson Wife bc.1863 England Francis G. Ferguson Son bc.1885 Glasgow George H. Ferguson Son bc.1886 Glasgow Philip G.T. Ferguson Son bc.1889 Glasgow.
As to Jane Ferguson, who can say.
This is the best I can do - Good Luck.
