Census look up 1841 to 1881 please
« on: Friday 24 August 07 10:34 BST (UK) »

I am interested in who was resident at Old Warden Park/The Mansion (later Shuttleworth) Old Warden, Beds.  There may be a family called Ongley, but I am still interested if there is not.  Particular year of interest is 1861, but who was resident any other census is still pertinent to my research.

Kind regards

Very interesting.  The Ongley I'm after is Robert Ongley, but from the age of George, possibly a sibling.  Mount Pleasant sound large enough that it could have become The Mansion and perhaps changed it's name at a later date.

Can Mount Pleasant be found in any other census?  Then I can cross reference with the 1881.  See if they both come up or just the one.

Many thanks.

George Ongley was resident in Mount Pleasant, Old Warden for the census years 1851 - 1871. always with 3 servants, he was a farmer, 200 acres emplying 9 -10 men
Born Oxford St., London c 1810.  the 1871 census shows him as George Henley Ongley

Death
George Henly Ongley  age 63
June ¼ 1871  Biggleswade,  3b  216

I can send you the census entry for 1871 if you wish as you have the 1851 & '61 from Susan.

At the top of the image of the 1861 census it states Old Warden

The Complete Peerage vol 10 p 66 says of the Ongley peerage:
1814-77 Robert Henley-Ongley, Baron Ongley of Old Warden (an Irish peerage) son and heir of Robert Henley-Ongley (died 20 Aug 1814) was b 9 May and bap 14 July 1803 at Old Warden; educated at Oxford (Christ Church) matric 9 May 1822; he d unmarr on 21 Jan 1877, in his 74th year, at Bushey Lodge, Teddington, Middx, when his barony became extinct.

VCH states that Robert, last Lord Ongley, sold Old Warden Park before his death to Joseph Shuttleworth, but doesn't give an exact date - however on
http://www.sandy-bedfordshire.co.uk/local_attractions_in_sandy_bedfordshire_uk.htm
it says that the estate was sold in 1872 due to Robert's severe financial difficulties

Plenty of online descriptions of the property, which became known as Shuttleworth House (or Mansion) after the purchase by Shuttleworth, and now houses Shuttleworth College. (I played cricket there once many years ago, and was bowled first ball!)

I think Mount Pleasant was an area of Old Warden rather than the name of the mansion - I have seen other census entries where someone has given their birthplace alternately as Old Warden and Mount PLeasant (which up until then I'd never heard of)

Hello, just Googled this - seems Mount Pleasant is a farm in the Old Warden area.

http://community.midbeds.gov.uk/services/planning/conservation_design/old_warden__old_warden_park_conservation_area_review.asp

from this site's right hand side you can download a .pdf document then contains a pictures & a map.

Thanks John,

Dear All,

I've just been on some on-line directory sites and from what I can make out, brother George may have been running a farm at Mount Pleasant, or in an area known at Mount Pleasant (thank you all you rootchatters for your info on this).  But Robert Ongley had a 'seat' at a residence sometimes known as Walden House or Old Warden Park.  Although I don't think he was there much so his name won't help in the search.  Presumably servants may have been left there.  Can such a house be found in any census?  It seems that it only features in the 41 census as 'Park'.  I know it existed, but it seems to have escaped all census.

Regards

Hi KA,

Had a look at the 1861 for Old Warden and the only thing I found that looked like what you are looking for is a "Warden House"

There was a Charles Tanqueray and his family living there and house full of servants, including butlers, governess etc

Sorry if this is not much help
