Marriage at St Mary's, Reading
« on: Friday 24 August 07 16:22 BST (UK) »

Hi

I am looking for the marriage of William Long and Sophia Lewin.  I believe this took place on the 13th June 1815 at St Mary's Reading.

I'm just trying to ascertain whether these are my gr x 4 grandparents.  My gr x 3 grandmother was born/baptised in Kingston as were her brothers and sisters and I know her parents were William and Sophia Long.  I cannot find any suitable marriage in Surrey so I think this could be them in Reading - geographically not beyond the realms of possibility.

I'm hoping the parish records will give either witnesses or an occupation or any clue which will help me to either prove or disprove that these are my relatives.

Many thanks in advance for any help

Hi, I'm going to the Berks FHS Research Library tomorrow so I'll have a look and see if I can find them there. Jo

No luck, I'm afraid. St Marys, Reading is one of the many parishes not transcribed, so it'll have to be the Berks RO. I may go sometime soon, but I don't know when. Maybe someone else is going sooner? Sorry again! Jo

Hi KPM.

I was at Reading RO this afternoon and quickly took your note with me.

I found the marriage easily enough, your details were correct.

No parents names
witnessed by Joseph Plum and Geo Beck (may not mean a thing as many marriages were witnessed by professional witnesses then!)

both of this parish

The banns entry gave no clues either as BOTP

hope this helps

Hi Jc

Many thanks for checking out the marriage at Reading RO and apologies for the delay in replying.

The witness names don't mean anything at the moment but its given me something to go on - hopefully (as long as they weren't professional witnesses!) I can find some connection to the family.

Thanks again for taking the time to look into this for me
