Where is Kileagh, Cavan?
« on: Friday 24 August 07 16:57 UTC (UK) »

Records of four of my ancestors refer to "Kileagh, Cavan." I can't locate that on townland lists. My wife and I will be in Ireland Sept 1-16, and want to look up the sites where our ancestors lived. My ancestors were Thomas Hutton, b. 07 Feb 1656/7; John Hutton, d. 1684; Nicholas Starkey, b. 1640; and Sarah Starkey, d. 1700. Any assistance will be deeply appreciated. This may be our only chance to connect with our Irish roots!

Welcome to Rootschat. There are several possibilities why you can't find a place called Kileagh in Co. Cavan. It could be spelled wrong or it might not be a townland (could be an area, parish, etc.). Have you tried searching at www.seanruad.com using 'Kil'  'at beginning of word' etc.
Where exactly did you get the name of this townland?. Could be a phonetic spelling of an Irish word.

I got the name "Kileagh" from Ancestry. com.  OneWorld Tree shows 15 User-submitted trees using that Birth Place for Thomas Hutton. www.seanruad.com shows no townland by that name, but Civil Parishes named Killinagh and Killegil which may be possibilities.

When I Googled Kileagy, Cavan, Northern Ireland I was led back to rootsweb archives for 1998. A message there indicates a Jane O'Brien has finished tabulating the gravestone inscriptions for Killeagh Graveyard close to Midleton, County Cork. I will e-mail her to find out if the name list included Huttons and Starkeys.

Thank you very much for your valuable assistance!

Killeagh is a common townland name in Ireland (about 14 or so I think) but it's very possible the name has been written down wrong once and other people have copied it. Any information you find online (a bit like submitted entries on IGI) is doubtful unless backed up by evidence.
Back to the Quaker connection, found something very interesting on
www.cootehilltourism.com/html/things.htm -
"Cootehills Quaker community had a Meeting House in the centre of this old hillfort. It was built in 1738 and Quakers were active here until 1900. The burial ground contains some inscribed headstones. This is the only Quaker burial ground in the Cavan/Monaghan area."
Wonder if there are any headstones/burial records for it?
If you do decide to go there- check out this first:
www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g212521-i2664-k537617-Cootehill-Cavan_County_Cavan.html
And a bit of information here: www.sierratel.com/colinf/genuki/cav/

Hope you enjoy your visit to Ireland no matter what you do or don't find. It's quite damp at the moment (has rained almost all summer) but weather might pick up in September (usually does when the children head back to school).

I will certainly follow up on the three websites you cite before we leave.  I have requested the David Butler book on inter-library loan, and failing that, have located a used copy in England.

My wife has picked out all the places we are to go. Now I am to locate each on the map and plan our travel. We will stay at B & B, and expect to tour about 10 days, after researching for five days. You have reminded me to take a raincoat and umbrella.

Thank you kindly for your insights and suggestions!
