Where is Cotterlaugh, Carlow MM?
« on: Friday 24 August 07 17:03 UTC (UK) »

I suspect this is a Quaker meeting house, but can't locate it. My ancestor, Joseph Hutton, is listed as having been born there in 1689. My wife and I will be in Ireland Sept 1-16, and hope to explore the sites of our ancestors. We will be most grateful for any help!

This site gives different information and lists Cotterlaugh in County CARLOW:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/a/r/William-A-Harner/GENE9849-0017.html
Says Joseph Hutton born there but his father Thomas Hutton born Killeagh, Cavan.
If this isn't your tree suggest you try to contact the person who might have more details but would not go by the information there without more evidence. There is no are 14 Killeagh townlands in Ireland but none in Cavan or Carlow and there's nothing close to Cotterlaugh that I can see on www.seanruad.com

There's a book called Quaker Meeting Houses of Ireland by David Butler which migh be of interest. If you search on Google the link should come up.

Thank you very much for the Genealogy.com citation. It included helpful information I had not found in other places. However, I believe it still places Cotterlaugh in County Cavan. Here is a copy of the actual citation in question:

"Joseph Hutton, born Abt. 1689 in Cotterlaugh, Carlow MM, County Cavan, IRE; died 1735 in New Garden, Chester, PA;"

There seems to be a lot of detail on that site but still would not accept place name without further proof. I have seen IGI listing Ballymoney, Antrim, Co. Cork which turns out to be Ballymoney County Antrim- other end of Ireland from Co. Cork.
There is no townland called Cotterlaugh in Ireland and I still suspect it might be a phonetic spelling of a place in Ireland. Tracing the Quaker angle might bring more results. Were you able to get a reference to the book I mentioned?

My next step will be to order the book you cited. However, I doubt I'll get it before we leave for Ireland. Thank you for your valuable assistance. Clearly, this kind of research can be puzzling!
