Mary Ann Berry Sinclair 1873 Thrumster
« on: Saturday 25 August 07 01:02 BST (UK) »

(From a friend)

I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this for me.

Mary Ann Berry Sinclair allegedly had the following children:

John Sinclair birth date unknown
George (Geordie) Sinclair b1896-d1981
Isabella Sinclair birth date not known

Mary's parents were George Sinclair and Margaret Calder.

My problem is finding father of Mary's 3 children John, Geordie & Isabella and birth dates of John and Isabella. Did Mary in fact marry? If so who? She was still unmarried aged 27 in 1901 census.

John I believe went to Canada and Isabella married William Reid.
Any help with this family would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

James

Update and clarification from original searcher:

"Geordie Sinclair was born 7-7-1896 in Thrumster, Wick (from birth cert) to Mary Ann Sinclair. He was illiegitimate and no father on birth cert. He married Margaret Forbes Mackay on 14-4-1922 in Tain, Ross-shire (from marriage cert). Margaret was previously married to Gordon Reid in Loth, Sutherland. On marriage cert for Geordie & Margaret his mother was Mary Ann Sinclair, no father named. Geordie served in the army and sent money home to grandparents to look after his sister Isabella (it may have been that they were not fit to look after her and had her put in a home, this from family member but not sure if true).

Geordie's brother John Sinclair (no birth date or place but almost certainly Wick area.) emigrated to Canada (no idea when) but was never heard of by family since.
Sister Isabella was the youngest of the three children by a few years and may have been put in a home outwith Caithness along with possibly John when young. Isabella known as "Cissie" married William Reid in Ross-shire (don't know where).
These three children may even all be from different fathers.

It is said by family that one Daniel (Donald) Sinclair was the father of at least Geordie but there my not be any evidence for this claim unless a death cert contains this info. As Geordie did not die until 1981 I cannot say what is on death cert. Do not know when or where Mary Ann died but know she was born on 1st Jan 1873 in Thrumster, Wick.

Just hoped that someone out there knew of this family and may be willing to help clear the air for me.
Donald Sinclair was my great grandfather."

I can't go forwards with this family but I can go backwards.

I have Mary Ann Berry SINCLAIR on my SINCLAIR family tree born 1 Jan 1873 Sarclet, Wick parish to George SINCLAIR & Margaret CALDER.

George was born circa 1831/32 to John SINCLAIR & Annie OAG.

John SINCLAIR was bap 6 Nov 1795 Wick (born at Gansclet) to  Alexander Sutherland SINCLAIR in Gansclet & Elizabeth SINCLAIR.

Elizabeth SINCLAIR was born in America, her grandparents were James SINCLAIR Factor in Ulbster & Christina SINCLAIR, the latter's father being John SINCLAIR in Thrumster and her siblings being Catherine, Sidney & Ephraim.  Christina's sister Catherine SINCLAIR married Donald SINCLAIR the sailor the son of David SINCLAIR of Broynach & his second wife Janet EWAN or EWING.

Alexander Sutherland SINCLAIR in Gansclet was the son of John SINCLAIR in Gansclet & Christian / Christina CALDER.  John SINCLAIR was a son of Donald SINCLAIR the sailor & Janet EWAN the couple mentioned above.

Where I fit in is that I am descended from James SINCLAIR, a fisherman & salt maker at Sarclet, also chamberlain at Thrumster House, and his second wife Elspeth SINCLAIR.  James was another son to Donald SINCLAIR the sailor & Janet EWAN.

I have way more than the above, too much to impart it here, see PM for my email.

Peter

Whoa baby!!!!!!!

I have in fact just viewed the info at ukgen anyway and experienced one of those AHA moments!

It appears from the info at ukgen that Donald who had issue with Mary Ann Berry SINCLAIR later married Isabella CAMPBELL in 1897.  I have in fact received information from a correspondent about the latter marriage just a couple of days ago from a different angle.

If the ukgen material is correct then Mary Ann Berry SINCLAIR and Donald were related to each other via Donald SINCLAIR the sailor their common ancestor.

Mary Ann Berry SINCLAIR was the daughter of George SINCLAIR, son of John SINCLAIR, son of Alexander SINCLAIR, son of John SINCLAIR, son of Donald SINCLAIR the sailor.

Donald (also known as Daniel) was the son of Sydney SINCLAIR, daughter of George SINCLAIR (=Francisina SINCLAIR), son of Alexander SINCLAIR (=Elizabeth SUTHERLAND aka Betty MCRYRIE), son of James SINCLAIR the chamberlain (1st marriage=Anna ROBERTSON), son of Donald SINCLAIR the sailor.

I descend from the chamberlain's second marriage, to Elspeth SINCLAIR.

I will try to catch up with your friend at ukgen because she and I should be related if Donald is her ancestor.
