Pattenden family of Hellingly
« on: Sunday 26 August 07 10:16 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to identify the parents of Jesse Pattenden, who was born about 1785 at Hellingly, the husband of Harriet James.

If anyone has any information on this I would be grateful for any assistance.

Hi Nanny Jan

Thanks very much for this.  Unfortunately the Jesse Pattinden (sic) christened on 3 July 1788 at Warbleton was buried 3 days later at Warbleton.

The closest match that I have found so far is Jesse Pattenden b 23 Oct 1789, the son of Thomas Pattenden and Elizabeth unknown.  The difficulty is that I have no evidence that this is the same Jesse Pattenden that was married to Harriet James.

Hopefully someone will have the answer.

Jesse and Harriet married in Lewes so they may well have moved around a bit.  There are various Pattenden marriages in Hellingly over the years and one interesting one of John to Elizabeth Gorringe in 1783 where the groom is of Warbleton.   The name Jesse is not very common so linking to two places may be useful.
The only Thomas to Elizabeth marriages on the SMI are 30 Dec 1764 to Elizabeth Sotten at Westham and 6 Mar 1753 to Elizabeth West at Wartling.

For any Pattendens I would certainly contact the Pattenden one name study - the researcher holds detailed information on the surname.
You can get in touch through the Guild of One Name Studies

Andrea

Thank you for this information - I will keep it for future reference.

Valda

I am a distant cousin of Karen Pattenden, who is the researcher of the one name study.  I have been in contact with Karen about Jesse Pattenden but unfortunately we do not know exactly how he fits in.

Hi Valda,

Came across this post quite by chance.  I have also been in touch with Karen.  My daughter's partner is a descendant of Eveline Annie Pattenden.   Smiley

Did you find any more information regarding Jesse?

Hi Joan

I'm afraid I don't know anything about Pattenden family lines but I do know the one name study is definitely worth contacting for anyone who have Pattendens in their ancestry.

Grin  I have an Ellen Pattenden from Hellingly!  Born 1828, she married the Gypsy Samuel Ripley in 1847.

Not a usual occupation for a traveller

1851 census HO107 1638 folio 213
Hellingly Sussex
Samuel Ripley 28 Head Married Ag lab Hellingly Sussex
Ellen Ripley 20 Wife Married Hellingly Sussex

Samuel was with what looked to be his parents in Hellingly on the 1841 census Thomas (also an ag lab born Catsfield Sussex on the 1851 census a farmer of 6 acres) and Mary born Cranbrook Kent. They were living next door to Ellen and Samuel on the 1851 census.

Ellen was with Jesse and Harriet Pattenden on the 1841 census.

Samuel and Ellen were still in Hellingly on the 1891 census. Samuel was a general labourer.

I have a large Ripley tree if anyone wants it, there is no doubt that Ellen's husband was Romany. He is my ancestor.
