Please help me - Again
« on: Friday 17 December 04 04:19 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

I have been having a lot of problems with the computer since switching to BroadBand,  and can spend only a fraction of the time I used to online.  Ironic,  since the soaring phonebills from my RootsChat addiction  led to us switching in the first place.  Roll Eyes  If some helpful souls out there can help,  I may be able to resume normal service.  Cool

Having sorted out all the viruses,  I think,  we were bombarded with as soon as I first switched,  I now find some things are either not working,  or working differently now.  I don't get a new window opening for my PMs,  I can't get into the chat room and all the animated smiles are static.  None of it fatal,  but it is annoying.

I assume the main reason for this is my new firewall.  I have installed ZoneAlarm.

Any help on this would really be appreciated.

Kazza.

Hi Kazza Smiley

If your running Windows XP  make sure you have downloaded from Microsoft the upgrade "Services Pack 2". It has it's own new firewall that doesn't interfere with your puter.
This should allow you to remove ZoneAlarm.

In fact I would do that first so it doesn't interfere with anything else.

Cheers

Static Animations -
If you are using IE go to Tools Internet Options,  Advanced scroll down to Multimedia and check that "Play Animations in Web Pages" is ticked.

Windows XP Service pack 2 has a pop up blocker,  I am afraid I don't use XP so I can not tell you exactly where the option is,  probably in the Control Panel, Firewall Settings.

You may also have got a Trojan on your system so as well as an up to date virus checker you should run AdAware or Spybot to check everything is now clean.

Personally I was not impressed with the XP built in firewall.  My personal perference is Kerio  which also includes program hijack tracking,  stopping most trojans and spyware in thier tracks.

I agree Jane the built in firewall of XP is not very sound. I have ZoneAlarm which I think is great.
If you think it is ZoneAlarm which is causing the problems, uninstall it and reinstall it and on the reinstall, choose the Beginners option - it will then prompt you for every internet setting to make.  Each time you make a new setting, it will remember it so you have to go through this only once for each application you have installed (e.g. IE, OutlookExpress).  You should also check the firewall settings if, after this, you are having problems.

The other suspect is the Service Pack 2 for XP if you have downloaded that - some people have experienced a lot of problems with this.

I would also recommend doing a full virus check as well as regular sweeps with Adaware (free from lavasoft.com) as Jane suggested.

If you think the problem may be ZoneAlarm I'm happy to help with settings etc.  Although ensure that you are in 'Stealth Mode'.
Good Luck

I just wanted to add that I have XP,  and downloaded the Service Pack 2 with no problems - it might be worth you trying it, if you haven't done so already.  It hasn't affected by Broadband connection at all!

If you are having problems with Zonealarm there are other free alternatives as well as the paid for versions.

One such program is outpost from agnitum at
http://www.agnitum.com/download/

Zonealarm is fine for the vast majority of users (myself included) but occasionally it does seem to cause the odd problem for a small minority of users.  Undecided

Instaling broadband crashed our computer completely - took it to the shop - they fixed it - bought it back home it wouldn't even start up - took it back to the shop and it started up fine and they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  This happened three times (every time we plugged broadband in), cost us £60.  In the end, phoned BT helpline - spent an hour and half on the phone and they more or less admitted that it was a problem with broadband.  It's never been right since but they won't admit it's their fault!  We are using windows ME.   A friend is going to (hopefully) sort it out soon  when we (I?) can bear to part with it!

As soon as I switched to broadband (DSL) I started to have trouble with virus and trojan attacks.

My husband installed a wireless router (about $60) and have had no trouble since.

I use the router to access the web from my laptop but you can install a router even if you only have one puter.

The tech nerd on my local radio station says that wireless router will stop anyone from getting in to your system, best firewall around..

If you go to symantec.com and download the "Security Check" they will analyze your puter and recommend action...it's free.

I have no interest in Symantec other than being a satisfied customer.

Cheers,

I don't think it's a good idea trying to run a firewall such as Zone Alarm with XP SP2.  It has its own firewall, much better than the origianl, and the 2 clash.

Its never good to have two versions of any type of program running especially security programs such as firewalls and anti-virus.

That said the built in firewall with XP SP2 while better than the original is nowhere nearly as effective as even the free versions of programs such as zonealarm and outpost ..... and it doesn't even merit a mention in the same breath as the pro versions of these programs.

As regards the router solution .... this is effectively providing a hardware firewall which is always far better than a software version but it doesn't have to be a wireless version as given the rise in popularity of wireless the older wired versions of the routers are falling in price quite dramatically and can be picked up pretty cheaply .

Be aware that a hardware firewall.  Although it does stop the huge variety of "push" trojans and viruses will not stop those which you download as part of software or as e-mail attachments.

Belt and braces is probably best,  a hardware router, a software firewall to act as a second line of defence,  backed up by a virus checker.  Also make sure your virus checker is updated regularlly,  at a minimum twice a week,  or everytime you go online if you surf less often.   Also remember even if you have set your virus checker,  adware programs and firewalls to auto update they all need checking to ensure they really are up to date.

Hi all.

Thanks for all the advice and help,  it is really appreciated.  Kiss

I have been offline for a while,  hardware problems,  but I think I am back now.  Although I still have a cracked mother-board for now.  Roll Eyes

My PM windows are now fixed,  and I can use the chat-room.   But my little smilie man is static,  though other ones are working.  Grin Grin

I am running AVG,  ZA and will reinstall Spybot,  it disappeared in the BB amend.  So I think I am covered,  let me know if you disagree.  Cool

I have not installed SP2 after hearing so many horror stories,  and everything seemed OK so I figure if it is not broken........... Grin

Megabelly - Thanks for the Pitstop tip,  I have used it and it says all is well.

JonathanW -  I did think ZA was the problem,  I am in stealth mode,  and I am horrified at how many access attempts are blocked.

Don't worry about the majority of these as they are most likely from your ISP's servers checking to see if you are online.
