Edward Bain and Ann Quinn
« on: Saturday 13 September 08 10:22 UTC (UK) »

Hello, I am looking for a marriage of Edward Bain and Ann Quinn. I only have a possibility (unproven as yet) that Edward came from Offaly (Kings County). I do know that they had at least 3 children in Ireland - Mary (1843), William (1847) and Patrick (1849). Some time between 1849 and 1858 the family moved to Manchester (Chorlton upon Medlock) where another son, Edward Bain (1858) was born. I would love to get more information on the origins of Edward Bain (born about 1821) and his wife Ann Quinn (also born about 1821, possibly in Kilkenny but again unproven as yet).

Where might I find records of their travel from Ireland to England (presumably to Liverpool?) within the period 1849 and 1858?

First of all, no records were (or are) kept of people travelling between Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales as all were part of U.K.

Next, civil registration of began in 1864 (Catholic) & 1845 (other marriages) so there will be no marriage certificate. Birth and death registrations began in 1864.

To look for records in Ireland you ned to know where they lived (parish if not townland, not just the county or 'Ireland').

Have you traced Edward and Ann in all English census records (1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901) to see if they list a county of birth? Also the children born in Ireland?

I was thinking that there must be passenger lists for the boat journey across to England, but all I can find is from Ireland to America.

Annoyingly, so far all the records I have found just state that they came from Ireland (1861 census) or Kings County (for Edward) and Kilkenny (for Ann, or Mary - it's debatable whether this is the same person) in the 1871 census.

As I said, records weren't kept for people travelling between Ireland and England (it was all part of U.K.) and even now passenger lists aren't kept.
