Thomas Burns / Byrnes born abt 1851
« on: Saturday 18 July 09 04:27 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
I am trying to find anything to do with the birth of Thomas Burns / Byrnes around 1851. His father was called Patrick, and were possibly from Belfast. The first mention of Thomas I can find is in October 1871 when he joined the Huddersfield police force in England aged about 20. I have read everything I can find, but no luck as to his date of birth, birthplace of mothers name. I dont Know if he came to Enland on his own or with his parents.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Yorkshire Lad.

Previous thread here: www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,197545.msg986825.html#msg986825

Did you look at his police records? and if so did they give no clues as to family, birthplace, etc.? "possibly from Belfast"- what was the source of this? Is Thomas in 1911 English census and if so what's listed there as place of birth?
Have you found Thomas in 1871 English census (just before he joined police)?
Since civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 here will be no birth certificate for Thomas and without an exact place (parish/street if not actual townland) you can't start searching for church records.

Based on details found in 1911 census it looks like Thomas Burns was born "Balinlough, County Roscommon" so I'm moving this post to Co. Roscommon board to see if anyone can help further.

Can anyone offer information about the birth date and mothers name of Thomas Burns. He married and died as Burns but the spelling may well have been different at birth. He was born in 1851 - 52 in Balinlough, County Roscommon. His fathers name was Patrick and was a farmer. He joined Huddersfield (England) police force in 1873, and didn't appear on a census until 1881 in Huddersfield.
Any help would be appreciatedf,
Thanks,

There are some Co. Roscommon parish transcripts available on the Irish Family History Foundation system. The website is pay per view - €5  per record see : www.irish-roots.ie

see the list of Co. Roscommon sources they include : http://irish-roots.ie/roscommon.asp.

the details for Ballinglough town (from the townland database - www.seanruad.com ) :

 Barony : Castlereagh
 Civil Parish : Kiltullagh
 PLU : Castlereagh

The RC parish for the area is also Kiltullagh, and records for both RC and CofI are included in the IFHF database. RC records are also available for this parish in the National Library on film P.4212 and start in about 1839. (there are some records missing for the 1870s)
