Help finding birth records
« on: Tuesday 28 August 07 17:52 BST (UK) »

Hello,

I have tried without any success to find my great grandmother's birth record in 1865 and would very much appreciate some help or thoughts on the matter.

She was Harriett Knight, born 1865, according to census entries in Black Bull, Staffordshire, which I believe is now Brindley Ford.

Her parents were William Knight and Jane White who didn't marry until 1867 by which time they had several children, born between 1858 and 1865, none of whom seem to have been registered or baptised anywhere. All of these children were born in Staffordshire but places vary so I have assumed that the family moved around a great deal. I have searched for the birth record under both surnames. Censuses have them listed as Knight.

William Knight was born in Surrey, Jane White in Staffordshire and they ended up in Middlesbrough where William was a furnaceman in the rapidly growing iron and steel industry and Jane spent several years in and out of prison for petty theft.

I know that in the early days of registration some people didn't bother but surely, by 1865, they would have had to do it. The last two offspring, born in Middlesbrough, were registered there.

Any thoughts?

Jen

The compulsory registering of births started in 1875 so you just may be unlucky.

Where have you checked??

I don't know Staffordshire at all - did you see this one?

This matches Henry on the 1871 census - his birth place is given as Stoke

Henry Knight
Birth registered qrt ending June 1860
Stoke Upon Trent
Staffordshire
Volume 6b
Page 196

The only Thomas I can see was registered in Bromsgrove which doesn't fit in with birth place of Wednesbury

I think you deserve champagne!

Woolstanton is close to Tunstall, where William and Jane married and not far from Brindley Ford where she says she was born. I can't think how I have missed it unless the page has only recently been transcribed from an illegible (online) original. This must be my Harriet and the certificate will be winging its way to me just as soon as I have finished saying thank you to you.

Hooray!

Cheers,

Jen

Tricia,

Harriet's birth certificate arrived a few days ago and although it didn't tell me anything new about her parents, it did clarify her place of birth - Brindley Ford, Wedgwood, which, with her father being a furnaceman, makes absolute sense. I was about to be excited, thinking that maybe that he worked for the Wedgwood pottery family but a search tells me that Josiah Wedgwood was not in Brindley Ford and that although there was a distant relation who did have his works there, it seems that within any one pottery works, there may have been several different small businesses operating.

But at least I now know that Harriet was officially registered and if I am ever in the area, I will have more of an idea where to start searching for her baptism record.

Thank you so much for your help.

Jen if you scroll down to the "origin of the surname" you'll see the Wedgwood's could have taken their name from"Wedgwood farm"
Brindley ford,I'm thinking Wedgwood could have been an area in Brindley ford..
