Can anyone help me find old photo's of the Locharbriggs Quarry around 1845. Also Quarry Road, Locharbriggs.
My grandmother was born there, in 1847. Her father was a quarryman.
Any information would be very much appreciated.

hi cupcake, i was down that way a few weeks ago i believe the quarry is still there and working perhaps if you wrote to quarry they may have some old photos that they could give you photo copies of. or perhaps someone may see your request and perhaps the ewert library i think it is in dumfries may have photos that they could copy for you, i wont be that way again till early next year i visit the churchyard there at amisfield it overlooks the quarry at locharbriggs hope sumone may help you get photos kind regards harrywrag

Hi cupcake 
Photography had only just been invented in the 1840s and in 1845 the only commercially available process was the daguerreotype. These were very expensive to make and so they were only used for portraits taken inside a studio. I don't think you'll find any photos of your quarry from earlier than about the 1860s or 70s.

I cant help with the photographs, but I am up that way in a couple of weeks time (family home is VERY close to the quarry) would you like me to get a couple of pictures as is now?
The quarry is actually a lot larger now than it was in the 1800s. However, the earlier quarry is now just a dangerous water filled hole, with a scrap yard at the edge.
But seriously, if there is any pictures, the quarry itself is your best bet closely followed by the Ewart Library (I'm sure the library is made of Locharbriggs sandstone, as is half of Dumfries). I can remember seeing something when I was little, and I seem to think that it was blown up pictures in the quarry offices themselves. I only remember as I love working/construction type pictures.

Thanks for your reply and sorry I haven't replied before now. Have been in hospital and just came accross it today.
The family name is Mein. I was trying to find out where the Quarry houses were. However, I think my G. Grandmother was born, just about where the the old railway bridge was, at Akers Avenue. There were also some of the family who lived at Jericho bridge, also a quarry worker.
Have been meaning to say, your photo looks familiar. Did you go to Dumfries High School?

hi i've just noticed this post. i live in locharbriggs.
if you wish any info or photos taken i would be more than happy to do it for you.
i would be more than happy to ask at local library for any info and pics of quarry or locharbriggs.
the quarry is still going we often here them blasting 2-3 times a week.
the only quarry houses i can think of are the ones on quarry road? i do know the local farmer who would be able to tell me as his family have run the same farm for decades.

Thank you for your reply.
I to live at Locharbriggs which makes it more interesting to know where my G Grandmother was born. As I said, I only have an idea.
Going by the 1851 Census she was born near where the old railway bridge was - near Akers Avenue.
Perhaps the local farmer could be of some help.

The quarry cottages could refer to several places.
There is a single cottage on Quarry Road just at the head of the old Quarry. It could also refer to the row of cottages on the Edinburgh Road as you leave Locharbriggs (Near the new quarry entrance, and much closer to Akers Avenue)
The road that runs through the quarry (and connects Edinburgh Road and Quarry Road - Ive no idea what it is called) is where the Quarry offices are (newish sandstone building) and I believe they were built on the site of some older buildings, it is possible these could also have been the quarry cottages. If you are close, it may be worth going to the quarry offices and asking if there is someone there who might know...

Don't worry about rambling on, I am only to pleased to get as much help as I can.
Have been to the Quarry office but, they weren't able to help. Thought they may have had some old photos. However,I didn't realise the quarry was built on some older buildings.
I know there were houses at Jericho bridge where some rellies lived.
Perhaps I will never know where she was born. Has been interesting looking, but one gets to a dead end eventually.
