Exeter Assizes Court Proceedings 1867 & 1869
« on: Wednesday 29 August 07 07:27 BST (UK) »

My apologies if this topic has already been addressed but I can not find a thread search facility on this board to check.

I am trying to find court proceedings for a judgement handed down at the Exeter Assizes on February 19 1867 and for a possible further case around about March 1869. Is this information easily available either to view or to order?

Thanks

Assize records are held at The National Archives at Kew

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/researchguidesindex.asp

This is the research guide page - scroll down for the guides

Assizes: Criminal Trials, 1559-1971
Assizes: English, Key to Criminal Trials, 1559-1971
but also
Criminals, Tracing 19th and 20th Century

to see what sort of records are available.
Assize courts had the Queen's judges sitting at them who travelled around the particular circuits to hear cases in each of the assize towns. Quarter sessions courts were local and their records will be held in Devon County Record Office.

Thanks very much.

Curses, I was at the NA just yesterday looking up a relative's RM records - this court information did not become apparent to me until I was back at home reading through his papers.

Not sure if the dates fit but you could try Here.

Thank you - very interesting but no sign of my relative.

I have located his first offence:

From the 'Western Morning News' of Wednesday, February 20, 1867:

DEVON INTERMEDIATE SESSIONS
The Devon Intermediate Sessions were held yesterday at the Castle of Exeter...

SECOND COURT
Before Sir J. Duckworth, Bart., and Mr. D.B. Davy...

William Hammond, 32, marine, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment for stealing a duck at Compton Gifford, the property of Geo. Leaman.

He may have re-offended in 1869 or the report could be a re-statement of this offence.
